Leftist political streamer Hasan Piker has filed a $72.5 million defamation lawsuit against conservative commentator and CNN contributor Scott Jennings, alleging that Jennings used manipulated video footage to falsely accuse him of advocating for the lynching of Black Americans.
According to Bloomberg Law, the lawsuit was filed Tuesday, October 27, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
Piker is seeking $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages. The complaint includes claims of defamation per se, defamation by implication, and false light.
The dispute centers on comments Piker made during an October 2024 livestream that resurfaced in an August 2026 episode of The Scott Jennings Show.
Jennings Accused Piker of Advocating Racial Violence
During his August 11 program, Jennings played a 42-second compilation of footage featuring Piker discussing race and American politics.
The video had previously circulated on X after being shared by the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Jennings presented the footage while discussing Piker’s association with Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who had appeared alongside the streamer at campaign events.

During the segment, Jennings accused Piker of promoting a return to racial violence in the United States.
Jennings subsequently shared the segment on X, writing that El-Sayed’s political ally believed the country should resume violence against Black Americans.
According to Mediaite, Piker’s attorneys contend that Jennings attributed statements to their client that were not accurately represented in the original footage.
Lawsuit Alleges Video Removed Critical Context
The footage originated from an October 29, 2024, Twitch livestream in which Piker was reacting to a debate between two Black political commentators.
During that broadcast, Piker criticized a conservative participant who had blamed progressive district attorneys for problems affecting Black communities. Piker responded by sarcastically imitating what he interpreted as the participant’s position, referencing an earlier period of American history when such violence occurred.
The lawsuit alleges that the edited compilation removed Piker’s introductory words, “He said,” along with laughter and additional commentary indicating that he was mocking the participant rather than expressing his own views.
Attorneys also allege that Jennings added an inaccurate on-screen quotation presenting the sarcastic remarks as Piker’s actual position.

According to Forbes, the video combined footage from three separate livestreams and rearranged portions of Piker’s statements.
Fact-checking outlet Snopes subsequently examined the controversy and concluded that the circulated footage had been heavily edited and presented without important context.
The lawsuit argues that Jennings either knew the material was misleading or disregarded evidence that contradicted his characterization.
Those allegations have not been established in court.
Piker’s Attorneys Sought a Retraction
According to Courthouse News Service, Piker’s attorneys sent Jennings a written retraction demand on August 31.
The complaint states that Jennings’ legal representatives acknowledged receiving the demand but did not provide a substantive response or issue a correction.

Piker maintains that the accusations damaged his reputation and threatened his professional relationships, including streaming revenue and sponsorship opportunities.
Jennings had not publicly responded to the lawsuit as of the initial reporting.
Lawsuit Faces Public-Figure Defamation Standards
Because Piker is a prominent public commentator, his lawsuit is subject to the heightened legal standards governing defamation claims brought by public figures.
Under the Supreme Court’s New York Times Co. v. Sullivan precedent, public figures generally must demonstrate actual malice, meaning that a defendant published a false statement knowing it was false or with reckless disregard for its accuracy.
The standard protects political criticism and commentary while allowing legal remedies for certain knowingly or recklessly false factual accusations.

Piker’s attorneys argue that Jennings’ presentation went beyond protected political criticism by attributing statements and positions to Piker that he had not expressed.
Jennings will have an opportunity to contest those allegations and present his defense as the litigation proceeds.
The $72.5 million sought by Piker represents requested damages, not a court award or an independently established calculation of financial losses.
No ruling on the merits of the defamation claims had been reported as of October 28.
