One of Universal Orlando Resort’s most unlikely success stories is about to reach new heights. Earl the Squirrel, a character who began as an inside joke among theme park employees before developing a devoted following among guests and on social media, is officially getting his own balloon in the 100th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Universal Orlando announced Wednesday that Earl will make his New York City debut on November 26, 2026, becoming the first character from Universal Orlando Resort to receive a balloon in the iconic Thanksgiving celebration.

The balloon will stand 30.4 feet tall and measure 14.5 feet wide, featuring Earl wearing his signature winter hat while clutching a blue Christmas light.

It’s an extraordinary milestone for a character whose existence can be traced back to a real squirrel causing trouble in a Christmas tree nearly two decades ago.

Earl the Squirrel’s Unlikely Origins

Long before Earl became a recognizable holiday mascot, Universal Studios Florida employees encountered an unusual problem with the park’s massive Christmas tree.

According to Universal’s official history, a squirrel had made its home among the branches and developed a particular fascination with the tree’s blue Christmas lights.

The mischievous animal repeatedly stole lights and damaged wiring, leaving employees puzzled about why sections of the tree weren’t functioning properly.

After discovering the culprit, Universal employees turned the incident into an inside joke. A small squirrel decoration was subsequently hidden among the tree’s branches as a tribute to their unexpected holiday visitor.

What started as an employee tradition eventually caught the attention of observant park guests.

Visitors began searching for the squirrel, sharing their discoveries, and turning the hidden decoration into an unofficial holiday scavenger hunt.

Social Media Helps Turn Earl Into a Universal Icon

As Universal Orlando’s online fan community grew, so did Earl’s popularity.

Theme park enthusiasts began sharing photographs of the hidden squirrel on social media, introducing the tradition to people who might otherwise have walked straight past the Christmas tree.

The annual search became something fans anticipated, with online discussions helping spread awareness of Universal’s unusual holiday mascot.

The enthusiasm eventually convinced Universal that Earl could become something considerably bigger.

By 2020, Earl was featured in the resort’s Holiday Tribute Store and had inspired merchandise. In 2021, Universal introduced a full-sized costumed version of the character, allowing guests to meet the squirrel who had become something of a local celebrity.

The transformation was remarkable. A decoration originally intended as a joke had become an original character with his own merchandise, holiday appearances, and growing fan following.

Universal subsequently expanded Earl’s presence with additional collectibles, themed experiences, and even an original storybook, The Tale of Earl the Squirrel.

Unlike characters originating from established Hollywood franchises, Earl’s popularity developed organically through the enthusiasm of park guests and the online community.

Now, Earl is preparing for his biggest appearance yet.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Universal creative Lora Sauls explained how the character’s popularity eventually made him an important part of the resort’s holiday celebrations.

“Earl has risen to the status of Universal Studios Florida’s Christmas icon,” Sauls explained.

The character’s upcoming Macy’s appearance will feature more than just the massive balloon. Universal is also bringing performers, balloon handlers, and a dancing acorn to accompany Earl through Manhattan.

Following the Thanksgiving Day Parade, the balloon will travel to Universal Studios Florida, where it will join Universal’s Holiday Parade featuring Macy’s beginning in early December.

The resort is also celebrating with new Earl merchandise, character meet-and-greets, and holiday treats.

A Victory for Universal Orlando’s Fans

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Earl’s success is that he wasn’t originally conceived as a major intellectual property or elaborate corporate marketing campaign.

His popularity grew from a genuine theme park tradition that guests discovered, embraced, and shared with others.

While Universal certainly recognized the merchandising opportunities, Earl’s evolution illustrates how a passionate fan community can elevate something small into a recognizable entertainment property.
