Rockstar’s UK staff will vote on recognizing the IWGB Rockstar Game Workers Union from Nov. 12 through Nov. 26, a window that brackets the Nov. 19 console launch of Grand Theft Auto VI. If the ballot passes, the union says it would become the biggest recognized union in the UK games sector, covering more than 1,600 workers in the bargaining unit
The Verge reported the dates from an IWGB press release, and The Pressed Pixel carried the union’s 1,600-plus worker figure for nearly every UK role below director level. The vote is about recognition under terms already negotiated with management, not a strike mandate. Pay, bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible working, and generative AI policies are on the table if staff say yes.
A Ballot That Lands on Launch Week
November 19 is already the loudest date on the games calendar. Putting an anonymous online recognition vote across the two weeks around that launch forces Rockstar workers to weigh studio history and personal job security while the rest of the world is only talking about Vice City.
Committee member Shanti Easton-Steel has framed it as a chance to make gaming history twice in the same month: once with the game, once with a voice.

Rockstar head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe has said the company will go where the team goes on unionization. That public line lowers the temperature around whether management will fight the ballot. It doesn’t, however, decide the ballot. Workers still have to turn out, and a recognition deal only becomes real if the votes land on yes.

Why the Timing Is the Story
Union drives often wait for quieter quarters. This one did not. Closing arguments in a Glasgow employment tribunal over the 2025 dismissals of 31 union members fall on Nov. 17 and 18, inside the same voting window. The recognition ballot and the tribunal are separate tracks, but they share a month when Rockstar’s labor fight is as public as its biggest release.

For players, the practical takeaway is simple. The launch date stands. The vote does not halt the ship. For the people who built GTA VI in the UK, the practical takeaway is whether they want a formal seat at the table on the policies that shape the next decade of Rockstar work. The Verge has the calendar. The union has the pitch. Mid-November will have the tally.
Should a studio this big recognize a union as GTA launches, or keep labor talks off the release calendar? Sound off and let us know!
