A new documentary will chronicle the rise and fall of BioWare, the once-beloved developer behind Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, including its final days before Electronic Arts permanently shut down the studio.
Titled Massive Effect: The BioWare Story, the documentary promises an inside look at the company’s 31-year history, from its beginnings as a small Canadian developer to its eventual collapse following years of disappointing releases, controversial creative decisions, and growing dissatisfaction among longtime fans.
According to Video Games Chronicle, production began approximately two years before EA announced BioWare’s closure on October 21, 2026. Consequently, filmmakers were already documenting the company’s final chapter before its fate became public.
BioWare’s Rise and Fall
Founded in 1995 by Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip, BioWare established itself as one of the industry’s premier role-playing game developers.
Its early successes included Baldur’s Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and the original Mass Effect trilogy, games celebrated for their storytelling, memorable characters, and meaningful player choices.

However, the BioWare that produced those classics increasingly seemed unrecognizable to longtime fans.
Following EA’s acquisition of the studio in 2007, BioWare experienced considerable creative and commercial turbulence. Mass Effect: Andromeda disappointed audiences in 2017, while 2019’s Anthem became a notorious commercial and critical failure.
The studio’s final major release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, further divided its audience in 2024.

The game attracted criticism for its identity-focused storytelling, particularly its handling of gender identity and dialogue that some players considered preachy and disconnected from the franchise’s established tone.
Rather than delivering the mature fantasy storytelling that helped establish BioWare’s reputation, critics argued that the studio had increasingly prioritized contemporary social messaging over compelling characters and player freedom.
Those creative controversies became part of a broader pattern of audience dissatisfaction that accompanied the company’s decline.
Documentary Features BioWare Veterans
As reported by Engadget, the documentary is directed by Akash Sherman and produced by Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie for Canada’s Super Channel.
The film features interviews with BioWare’s three founders alongside prominent industry figures, including Casey Hudson, Drew Karpyshyn, David Gaider, Mark Darrah, Jennifer Hale, and former EA CEO John Riccitiello.

The involvement of former executives and developers could provide valuable insight into the decisions that ultimately shaped BioWare’s trajectory.
However, whether the documentary will seriously examine the studio’s creative missteps remains unclear.
Will the Documentary Tell the Whole Story?
The central question surrounding Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is whether it will offer a critical examination of BioWare’s decline or primarily serve as a nostalgic tribute to its legacy.
EA’s business decisions certainly deserve scrutiny, particularly following the cancellation of the next Mass Effect installment. But BioWare’s leadership and creative direction also warrant examination.

The studio’s problems cannot simply be reduced to corporate interference when years of controversial design choices, disappointing releases, and alienated customers preceded its closure.
For longtime fans, remembering BioWare’s achievements does not require defending everything the company became.
Massive Effect: The BioWare Story is scheduled for release in 2027, with a planned film festival run.
Whether it confronts the full story of BioWare’s downfall or merely celebrates its glory days remains to be seen.
