Is Jurassic World Dominion or Top Gun Maverick the bigger box office story? It’s difficult to say.
When the review for Jurrasic World Dominion came out on this website, some might have been aghast. Our writer claimed the movie was the worst of 2022 and the film received our lowest ever rating, a 1.5. Granted, we didn’t do a Space Jam New Legacy a review, so maybe it would have been lower had that happened?
But whatever we said or the critics on mainstream and access media might have said, it’s not dissuading audiences from going to see the latest dinosaur movie… yet. Deadline is reporting that the industry believes Jurassic World Dominion is going to top the $140 million mark in its opening. That’s a heck of an opener and with Top Gun Maverick continuing to overachieve, this is going to be one fantastic weekend for movie theater owners. That’s cause for celebration.
Now this is a box office feat to be applauded. The worst reviewed Jurassic movie of all time, Jurassic World Dominion, is topping all expectations with a $142.1M opening. That’s only 4% off the debut of the last movie, Fallen Kingdom, which opened to $148m.
More hooray: Dominion posted the second-best opening day for a Jurassic movie with $59.55M, behind 2015’s Jurassic World ($81.9M) and ahead of Fallen Kingdom‘s $58.5M first day. Again, that first day includes the $18M in previews.
It should be said that Jurassic Park and Jurassic World is one of the biggest franchises of all time, and coming in less than the previous movie while tickets are at much higher price point, well, it’s not great. But when you’re dealing with numbers this big, anything too negative is just petty. It’s a big win for all involved with the movie. Unfortunately, it may not last and there are serious worries, especially here at That Park Place, that this movie is ultimately going to have a very steep drop-off.
And if you can believe it, because honestly it is very hard to believe, Top Gun Maverick is said to be heading for more than $50M again, even in spite of a huge blockbuster competitor. That puts it in the running to overtake Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in just its third weekend out (Strange is in its sixth weekend). We’ve said before, Top Gun is likely to change the film industry.
