Andrew Garfield’s Attacks on the Rich Are Ludicrous and Hypocritical

Andrew Garfield interview - Hits Radio, YouTube

Andrew Garfield would like billionaires to be “scared s**tless” by his new movie. That is a striking thing to say from inside a business that is, at every level that matters, run by people who are either already billionaires or live a short drive from that club.

The film is The Uprising, Paul Greengrass’s account of the 1381 Peasants’ Revolt, with Garfield as a farmer-turned-rebel. At a Q&A he hoped the picture would be “galvanizing,” that audiences would see their own struggles in 14th-century England, and that “if any billionaires watch it, they’re scared sh**less.” He added that the ultra-rich are “the ones that might be the most soul sick” and “need the healing the most.”

The themes are old and not automatically unserious. Power concentrates, taxes bite, plague and war leave the bottom of the pile holding the bill. What is silly is the idea that this particular warning arrives from outside the castle!

Garfield’s own net worth is estimated at about $16 million. That is not billionaire money. It is also not peasant money. It is the kind of fortune that puts a person in the top sliver of American households, funds a life of first-class travel, good houses, and the ability to choose roles rather than take whatever pays the rent. He has been paid to play Spider-Man more than once. He is about to play OpenAI’s Sam Altman, a man whose wealth is measured in the billions, in Luca Guadagnino’s Artificial. The man telling billionaires they should be frightened by a movie about class revolt is a multi-millionaire actor whose next paycheck comes from impersonating one.

Then there are the people who actually decide whether his movies get made and released.

The Uprising is a Focus Features release. Focus is a Universal Pictures label. Universal sits inside NBCUniversal, which sits inside Comcast. Comcast’s chairman and CEO, Brian Roberts, has a net worth on the order of $1.5 billion. He is not a metaphor. He is a billionaire who ultimately oversees the company distributing the film that is supposed to terrify billionaires.

Further down the org chart, the numbers are smaller but still not medieval. Jason Blum, who produces through Blumhouse, is estimated at around $200 million. Donna Langley, who chairs Universal’s filmed entertainment group and now has a broader NBCUniversal content brief, does not publish a Celebrity Net Worth page; industry estimates put her in the high tens of millions to low hundreds of millions, built on years of studio-chair compensation, bonuses, and equity. Peter Kujawski, chairman of Focus Features, is a career studio executive whose personal fortune is not public, but the job is not a vow of poverty.

Garfield’s next film, Artificial, was developed at Amazon MGM Studios, Jeff Bezos’s company, before Amazon dropped it after investing tens of billions in OpenAI. Neon picked it up. Neon’s majority owner is Dan Friedkin of 30West and The Friedkin Group. Friedkin’s fortune, built on Gulf States Toyota and other holdings, is estimated in the $11–13 billion range.

So the chain looks like this: a $16 million actor, paid by a $200 million producer, distributed by a studio whose parent is run by a $1.5 billion cable heir, with a follow-up project now housed at a company controlled by an $11 billion-plus auto-and-entertainment heir, hopes that billionaires will watch a movie about peasants and feel a chill.

None of that makes inequality imaginary. It does make the posture a little ridiculous. Hollywood has a long habit of commissioning stories about the abused underclass and then premiering them for people who arrived in black cars. Garfield is not uniquely guilty of this; he is just the latest person to say the quiet part with unusual bluntness while standing on a red carpet. The Peasants’ Revolt is being sold, this week, by the same industry that will next sell him as a tech billionaire. The soul-sick may or may not buy tickets. The people who already own the ticket windows will be fine either way.

If the film is good, it does not need the lecture. If the lecture is the point, it would land harder from someone who had not spent two decades being very well paid by the same ecosystem he is now inviting to feel afraid. The uprising, in this version, still needs a distributor, a marketing budget, and a premiere. Those things are not free, and they are not supplied by ploughmen.
