Armie Hammer’s highly publicized return to Hollywood has taken an unexpected turn. According to a new report, a source claimed the actor was so disturbed after finally watching Citizen Vigilante that he described the film as “hateful” and “disgusting,” insisting it was nothing like the project he believed he had signed on to.

The low-budget thriller from controversial filmmaker Uwe Boll marked Hammer’s comeback following years away from the industry. Much of the conversation surrounding Citizen Vigilante has centered on the film’s treatment of immigration, crime, and what many see as the government’s reluctance to take action.

Almost universally panned by critics—the film currently holds a 6% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes—Citizen Vigilante has nevertheless found an enthusiastic audience online. Elon Musk even temporarily made the entire film available to watch for free on X.

Anonymous Source Claims Hammer Was Shocked by the Finished Film

According to a source who spoke with Puck News, Armie Hammer was deeply unsettled after watching Citizen Vigilante.

“The first time he saw it, he was in tears,” the source claimed. “And not tears of joy.”

Hammer has previously acknowledged that he was desperate to return to acting after his public cancellation.

“I would have done a f***ing cat food commercial,” he said in an earlier interview.

However, the source suggested that while Hammer expected the film to lean politically to the right, Uwe Boll’s unconventional production style prevented him from fully understanding the finished project until it was complete.

“It’s not like he sent him a hundred-page script,” the source told Puck News. “When he saw the final product, he was, ‘That was not the movie I thought we made.'”

Interestingly, Armie Hammer’s own comments while promoting Citizen Vigilante appear to support part of that claim. During an interview with Film Threat, the actor said Boll pitched the project around its violence and broader messaging, adding that the script he received was no more than 60 pages long.

“It was this really interesting, fun approach to filmmaking,” Hammer said.

Uwe Boll Rejects the Allegations

Boll has strongly rejected the suggestion that Hammer was misled.

In a statement provided to TheWrap, the director praised Hammer’s professionalism throughout production and dismissed reports of any conflict.

“Armie was perfect for the part and I loved working with him,” Boll said. “He was prepared and delivered every day on set. We both had a great time working together even if the subject matter of the film is very serious and real.”

Boll also argued that the film’s divisive reception was always intentional. Pointing to its audience scores and strong digital performance, he said he was less concerned with critical reviews than with viewers who connected with the movie’s message.

Hammer Has Not Addressed the Report

Hammer has yet to publicly respond to Puck News‘ report. Online reaction, however, has been mixed. One X post sharing the story received a Community Note pointing out that the claims Hammer called the film “hateful” and “disgusting,” was not given a full script, and cried after watching the final cut all originated from an anonymous source. The note also noted that Hammer has publicly praised both the film and its script in previous interviews.

Whether Armie Hammer’s reported reaction changes public perception of Citizen Vigilante remains to be seen. Some observers have suggested that, as he attempts to rebuild his career, distancing himself from such a politically divisive film could make strategic sense. At the same time, without a public statement from Hammer himself, the claims remain unverified. What is clear is that the controversy surrounding both the film and its star continues to generate debate.
