Atlus made the announcement with a new demo trailer for the game that reveals players will get to guide “Alain, a young prince on a journey to liberate five nations from the mighty Empire’s dominion.”

The official description for the game on Nintendo’s website states, “Unicorn Overlord combines the timeless tactical RPG genre with overworld exploration and innovative battle system for a unique epic fantasy experience in the iconic Vanillaware style.”

The game allows players to “traverse a vibrant world, assemble units and direct them into exquisitely animated battles.”

They are also able to “perform heroic deeds and grow renown throughout the five nations” as well as “cultivate a grand army with over 60 unique characters, from humans and elves to massive beasts and heavenly angels.”

As far as the game’s combat, players will take on their foes as part of battle stages where players are tasked with taking their enemies command post in what Vanillaware is describing as real-time combat.

Players must assess the battlefield and deploy their various units to take advantage of enemy positions or to counter enemy attacks. There will be different victory conditions for various battle stages, one such condition will be to defeat an enemy general.

Individual unit battles will take place within these battle stages once they make contact with an enemy unit. Players can coordinate their “unit’s tactics in advance with conditions that determine how and when skills will automatically be used.”

It’s suggested that players balance their teams with different character classes and skills to form a unit that can adapt to any situation.

The game features five different nations including Cornia, Drakenhold, Elheim, Bastorias, and Albion. Each nation has their own unique personality. For example, Albion is described as a “religious state on a large island in the western part of the continent, it commands strong faith-based national and military power under the Pontiff of the Palevian Orthodoxy. Many inhabitants are part of a winged population known as Angels.”

In contrast, Bastorias is described as “a country extending across a vast cold region to the north, populated by various types of beast-folk known as ‘bestrals’ who possess frightening martial prowess. Currently, the country is not ruled by a king but rather a council of clan leaders.”
