Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom is scheduled for a grand reopening in early May 2026 after closing in early January 2025 for an extensive refurbishment project. The resort has not released a specific reopening date beyond the general early May timeframe.
In a press release from March 12, Disney announced, “The attraction will reopen with new magic and the shine and polish of an all-over refurbishment in early May.”
Closure and Refurbishment
The attraction first closed on January 6, 2025 to begin a lengthy refurbishment that will include replacement of the ride’s track and updates to show scenes and effects. Disney officials have described the work as a “mountaintop to cavern‑deep” project, suggesting improvements both to the core ride mechanics and to themed elements within the coaster environment.
During the closure, construction crews have been observed throughout the Frontierland area working on sections of the track, entrance and exit queues, and surrounding infrastructure. At least some of the existing exit queue structures have been removed, and crews have been repairing concrete work near the coaster’s perimeter.

According to Disney’s official attraction page, the ride will reopen with what the company terms “a little bit of new magic” alongside the substantial facility enhancements. Planned updates include a reimagined Rainbow Caverns show scene featuring phosphorescent pools and lighting details, along with refreshed Audio‑Animatronics and other effects throughout the attraction.
Permits for the refurbishment project originally listed construction deadlines in early 2026 and suggested that work could extend into the spring. An amended construction permit was filed that extends coverage through August 31, 2026, although such extensions are common in large projects and do not necessarily indicate a later reopening date.

Industry reports have noted that the 16‑month closure spans more than the typical short‑term refurbishment window. By missing the peak Spring Break travel period, the project cost the Magic Kingdom the use of one of its higher‑capacity attractions during a historically busy travel season. However, the date will still get the ride back up for guests before the Memorial Day weekend and the start of summer for the Disney parks.
Context
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened at the Magic Kingdom in 1979 and has operated continuously with periodic maintenance over the decades. The current refurbishment is among the most extensive in recent years, reflecting both ride preservation and enhancements to guest experience elements.

The broader Walt Disney World Resort schedule for 2026 includes additional ride closures and reopenings across its parks, with several attractions returning after refurbishments alongside Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. These coordinated updates are part of routine long-term maintenance and improvements across the resort’s portfolio of attractions.
Disney has not yet announced details of any preview events or official reopening ceremonies for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Guests planning travel to Magic Kingdom in May or later in 2026 should monitor official posted calendars or Disney communications for confirmation of the exact day the ride returns to operation.
