Greta Gerwig’s controversial upcoming Narnia adaptation has received support from the families of C.S. Lewis’s stepsons. However, that endorsement has done little to settle concerns among skeptical readers.
For those fans, the central question remains whether Netflix’s The Magician’s Nephew preserves the author’s vision. Praise for the director’s enthusiasm offers limited reassurance when her creative decisions are precisely what audiences are questioning.
The statement also carries an important qualification: according to NarniaWeb, the families had not seen footage or heard audio from the film when contacted.
Official Statement Praises Gerwig’s Passion for Narnia
NarniaWeb reported on October 6 that the families of David and Douglas Gresham released their statement through Netflix.
“From our ongoing conversations with Greta Gerwig, we have personally witnessed her sincere passion for the Narnia series,” they said.
The statement described a positive set visit and expressed interest in future collaborations.

Although frequently discussed as an estate endorsement, the statement came specifically from the Gresham families. Their comments praise Gerwig and their experience with the production, but offer no assessment of the completed adaptation.
That distinction matters. Admiring a filmmaker’s commitment does not establish whether the resulting movie faithfully translates the books. Gerwig may sincerely love Narnia while making choices that longtime readers believe undermine it.
Endorsement Leaves Some Fans Unconvinced
Some online responses have questioned the significance of the endorsement or suggested that commercial interests influenced the praise. Others remain focused on concerns about Aslan and departures from the novel. While these reactions do not represent every viewer, they show why the statement has failed to reassure some readers.

There has also been speculation that contractual obligations require a positive public response. However, the available reporting provides no evidence establishing such a requirement.
Regardless of what prompted the statement, fans do not need to prove that an endorsement was compelled to explain why it fails to persuade them.

The books provide an independent standard against which an adaptation can be judged. A supportive statement cannot resolve questions about characterization, religious meaning, or changes to the story.
Likewise, disagreement with the endorsement does not establish that the families’ enthusiasm is insincere. Their approval can be genuine while carrying little weight with readers who question the production’s direction.
Fidelity to Lewis Remains the Central Question
As That Park Place previously explored, much of the controversy concerns Aslan. Casting Meryl Streep as his voice and drawing visual inspiration from David Bowie have prompted questions about Gerwig’s interpretation of Lewis’s Christ figure.
Reports nevertheless indicate that Aslan remains male in the film. Streep’s casting alone does not establish that the character’s sex has changed.

Although the first trailer does not reveal Aslan’s voice, its highly stylized visuals and apparent rock opera approach have fueled further criticism. The footage, accompanied by Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” prompted some viewers to draw unfavorable comparisons to Marvel films.
Gerwig has also described extensive research into Lewis, including his theological writings and visits to places associated with his life. That preparation demonstrates an interest in understanding the author, but its value will ultimately depend on how it informs the adaptation.
For readers concerned about Lewis’s Christian vision, the meaningful test will be how the film presents Aslan’s authority, the nature of evil, and the story’s moral foundations.
Adaptations inevitably require creative choices. Audiences can reasonably ask whether those choices serve the original story and preserve what made it worth adapting.
The Gresham families’ support adds context to the discussion. Winning over skeptical fans will require the film itself to demonstrate that their confidence was justified.
