Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries has officially been cast as Clayface in the upcoming DC Studios film, according to a report by TheWrap. This announcement regarding the Clayface actor comes as production is scheduled to commence this fall, with director James Watkins at the helm.

Watkins, who gained recognition for his work on the 2023 remake of the Danish thriller Speak No Evil, will lead the film’s direction. The latest draft of the screenplay was written by Hossein Amini, acclaimed for scripting the 2011 cult hit Drive. This draft replaces an earlier version by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep, The Haunting of Hill House), who was initially attached to the project as screenwriter.

The film is produced by Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris through their production company 6th & Idaho Productions, both closely associated with Reeves’ ongoing work in the Batman franchise. The release date is scheduled for September 11, 2026.

Casting and Creative Team Analysis

The search for the right Clayface actor concluded with the selection of Tom Rhys Harries, a rising Welsh talent. Known for his performances in The Return, alongside Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, and Kandahar, Harries has demonstrated range and intensity that suggest he can capture Clayface’s layered personality.

Director James Watkins is an interesting choice, given his background in tense, atmospheric thrillers. His work on Speak No Evil showed a skill for psychological dread and complex character interactions, which could translate well into a horror-tinged supervillain origin story. This also dovetails with Mike Flanagan’s earlier involvement, whose draft was reportedly leaning into horror and tragedy elements.

Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris’ continued production role reaffirms DC’s commitment to quality storytelling within the Batman universe, following the success of The Batman (2022) and The Penguin series, which have been well-received both critically and commercially.

Where Does This Fit in DC’s Strategy?

DC Studios has recently embraced a strategy of producing standalone films focused on villains and antiheroes, capitalizing on audience interest in complex characters beyond traditional heroes. The Penguin’s positive reception has clearly encouraged the studio to greenlight more projects that explore Gotham’s dark corners.

However, this approach carries risks. Previous villain-led projects in other franchises, most notably Sony’s Spider-Man “villain-verse,” struggled commercially despite heavy investment. DC’s success with The Penguin may be an exception rather than a rule.

The Clayface film seemingly aims to build on this momentum by offering a fresh take on a lesser-known but visually and thematically compelling villain. By anchoring the story around transformation and tragedy, the studio likely hopes to differentiate the movie in an increasingly crowded superhero landscape.

Looking Ahead

With Tom Rhys Harries now officially confirmed as the Clayface actor, the project enters a new phase, with production beginning later this year. Fans can expect a film that mixes thriller and horror elements with classic superhero storytelling, grounded by a strong creative team and a character ripe for reinvention.

While earlier rumors speculated about Josh Brolin’s involvement as Clayface, insiders confirmed that the role would be cast with a younger actor, making Harries a fitting choice. However, Brolin’s name still circulates for other potential roles within the expanding DC slate.

The next year will be critical to watch as DC Studios shapes its villain-centric universe. Clayface could either carve out a unique niche or struggle to capture the widespread appeal of more established heroes and antiheroes. For now, the film’s promise lies in its fresh approach and solid production team.
