Dana Walden is set to take control of video game production at Disney as part of a broader corporate restructuring. On Wednesday, she assumes her new role as President and Chief Creative Officer of Disney Entertainment.
Video games and digital entertainment were previously part of the broader Parks, Experiences and Products division. Moving it to the entertainment unit alongside film, TV, and streaming is a shift that suggests games are no longer being treated as a side business, but as a core part of Disney’s storytelling operation.
Video Games Join the Central Hierarchy
In a memo to staff, Walden wrote: “As I step into my new role, I’m pleased to share the new structure of Disney Entertainment, which integrates our games business together with our streaming, film, and television teams, aligning Disney’s world-class creative engines and platforms.

She added, “Fans today want to engage with Disney’s storytelling… in a multitude of ways… whether on Disney+, in theaters, or through digital games they love to play. With this unified approach, Disney can deliver the world’s most beloved entertainment to fans across the many ways they choose to enjoy it.”
The shift also removes video games from the purview of Parks, Experiences and Products, previously overseen by incoming CEO Josh D’Amaro. As part of the new structure, Sean Shoptaw, executive VP of games and digital entertainment, will now report directly to Walden. Walden also praised Shoptaw in her memo and expressed enthusiasm for their partnership.
Game Development Under New Oversight
In his role, Shoptaw oversees partnerships with external developers and publishers to create titles based on Disney IP. This includes the company’s major collaboration with Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. In 2024, Disney made a $1.5 billion investment for an equity stake in the gaming studio. Additionally, the two companies signed a multiyear deal to “collaborate on an all-new games and entertainment universe that will further expand the reach of beloved Disney stories and experiences.”

Moving Disney video games to the division overseen by Dana Walden isn’t merely cosmetic—it signals a redefinition of the company’s creative hierarchy. Still, the restructuring raises questions about how much will actually change in practice. While the move centralizes video game oversight under Walden, it remains unclear how directly Disney’s entertainment leadership will influence game development.
D’Amaro has said in interviews that he expects Dana Walden to operate with a large degree of autonomy. That independence concentrates creative control under Walden. However, it could also spark debate about how the vision of Walden—who in the past has been a political lightning rod—will translate into children’s and family gaming.

Whether this shift leads to deeper integration or new creative friction will depend on how Disney balances centralized control with the realities of game development.
Questions About Walden’s Impact
How video games ultimately fit into Disney’s long-term strategy remains to be seen. Dana Walden framed the shift as foundational, writing that it “aligns our games business more closely with Disney+ and Hulu, enabling us to expand the ways fans can engage with our stories, characters, and worlds.”
Whether that vision translates into meaningful change is less certain. Disney’s gaming efforts have long depended on external partnerships, and folding the division into its entertainment leadership does not necessarily resolve the structural challenges of producing successful interactive content.
The move may signal a shift in priorities—but whether it produces meaningful change will be determined by execution, not by titles or reporting lines.
