As The Walt Disney Company prepares for a major change in leadership, those in entertainment and politics are watching closely. On February 3rd, the company announced that Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro had been named Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, and that Dana Walden, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, had been named to the newly created role of President and Chief Creative Officer.

A new article in Variety asked how D’Amaro might revitalize Disney. It also reports that Walden will operate with a significant level of autonomy. However, Walden’s known political ties have some industry watchers asking if this is a risk in an increasingly politicized media landscape.

Dana Walden’s Official Role

Walden joined Disney in 2019 after the company’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Since then, her portfolio has expanded across Disney’s various entertainment assets. Variety reports that during her time as Disney’s TV and streaming chief she “established herself as a talent whisperer.” It suggests that D’Amaro must maintain a healthy relationship with Walden as she is “considered to be one of the industry’s strongest creative executives.”

Because D’Amaro lacks experience in film and television, insiders told Variety they sense that Walden will operate with significant autonomy. Walden will report directly to D’Amaro while overseeing programming, marketing, distribution and operations. However, Spencer Neumann, a former Disney executive who now is Netflix’s chief financial officer, told Variety, “Josh is not afraid to surround himself with people who know more about something than he does.”

Supporters argue that Walden’s experience could stabilize Disney’s creative strategy at a time when the company needs clarity. Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy, said Walden is “like the ship’s captain who is able to be a leader and, at the same time, the big sister to the crew.”

Political Ties

Many insiders expected Walden to be elected CEO as it was widely believed that she was Bob Iger’s preferred successor for the role. However, critics argued that Walden’s 30-year personal relationship with former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris was a liability. Walden had hosted Harris at her home and run a fundraiser for her presidential campaign.

Following Donald Trump’s reelection, some industry analysts felt that Walden’s political ties could present a liability to Disney. As Disney has increasingly been viewed as partisan, that perception raised the possibility that Walden could become a political lightning rod. Meanwhile, D’Amaro had managed to avoid becoming involved in the “Don’t Say Gay” battle against Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, and the temporary suspension of Jimmy Kimmel—in which Walden may have played a key role.

The Balance of Power

Professional concerns and political connections may have prevented Walden from being elected CEO. If Walden operates with substantial autonomy, the practical balance of power inside Disney’s entertainment division may look much the same as if she had been named CEO.

In a media climate where entertainment brands are routinely pulled into political battles, that reality carries risk. For a company whose brand has historically relied on broad cultural appeal, perception can carry real commercial consequences. Whether this structure shields Disney from controversy—or merely shifts the spotlight—remains to be seen.

All the better to blame her for when things continue to spiral out of control on the content side. D’bag-mero is an ace at avoiding taking a position that he can’t later blame on someone or something else.

More left wing lunacy on the way.

I hope she brings that same word salad energy that Kamala brought to the Vice Presidency.

Another KK. Disney shows how much they hate us.
