Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is standing firmly behind James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe, even after Supergirl ended its theatrical run as one of the worst-performing DC films of the past 16 years.
Speaking during Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter earnings call Thursday, Zaslav dismissed the notion that the studio would rethink its strategy following Supergirl‘s disappointing performance, instead praising the next chapter in the franchise, Superman: Man of Tomorrow.
“James is focused on Man of Tomorrow,” Zaslav told investors. “I saw some pictures yesterday that looked amazing. Actually, yesterday was James’s birthday, and he’s out working. He’s working 16, 18 hours a day. It looks fantastic. We’re super excited about it.”

The comments came after analysts questioned whether Supergirl‘s disastrous box office performance would force Warner Bros. Discovery to reconsider the direction of DC Studios.
According to Deadline, Zaslav’s answer was clear: no. The company remains committed to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s long-term plan for the DC Universe.
Staying the Course Despite Supergirl
The timing of Zaslav’s comments is notable.
Supergirl concluded its theatrical run with approximately $126 million worldwide, making it one of the lowest-grossing DC films in modern history. The film’s poor performance was significant enough that Deadline reported it negatively impacted Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter financial results.
Rather than signaling a course correction, however, Zaslav pointed to the studio’s upcoming slate as evidence that confidence remains high.

Alongside Man of Tomorrow, he highlighted Clayface, HBO’s Lanterns, and Matt Reeves’ long-awaited sequel to The Batman as reasons investors should remain optimistic.
“We have a robust pipeline, and Peter and James are hard at work,” Zaslav said.
For now, Warner Bros. Discovery appears determined to ride out the setback instead of treating Supergirl as a referendum on the entire DCU.
Investors Have Heard This Before
There is, however, one aspect of Zaslav’s comments that may give some observers pause.
This is hardly the first time the Warner Bros. Discovery CEO has enthusiastically praised an unreleased DC movie.
Before The Flash debuted in 2023, Zaslav famously declared that he “loved” the film and described it as “a wow.” At the time, executives and filmmakers alike promoted the movie as one of the greatest superhero films ever made.

The audience ultimately disagreed.
Despite the executive enthusiasm, The Flash became one of the biggest financial disappointments in DC history, losing the studio hundreds of millions of dollars and further destabilizing Warner Bros.’ superhero ambitions.
That history doesn’t mean Man of Tomorrow will suffer the same fate. Every film stands on its own merits.
But it does suggest investors and moviegoers alike may want to treat executive praise with a healthy degree of skepticism. A CEO’s confidence is not the same thing as audience demand, and Zaslav’s public track record of hyping DC films has produced mixed results at best.
The Stakes Could Not Be Higher
Unlike Supergirl, Man of Tomorrow won’t have the luxury of being viewed as a smaller chapter in a larger universe.
It is the direct sequel to the film that launched James Gunn’s DC Universe and will serve as one of the clearest indicators yet of whether audiences are embracing the new direction for DC on a long-term basis.

A strong performance would reinforce Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to stay the course.
Another disappointment, however, would likely intensify questions about whether Gunn’s creative vision is connecting with general audiences the way the studio hoped.
For now, Zaslav clearly believes the answer will be yes.
Whether moviegoers agree won’t be known until 2027.
The Paramount Merger Could Change Everything
There’s another wrinkle to this story that extends beyond Man of Tomorrow itself.
David Zaslav may be fully committed to James Gunn’s long-term vision today, but he may not ultimately be the executive making those decisions in the years ahead.
Warner Bros. Discovery remains in the process of being acquired by Paramount Global in a proposed $110 billion merger that has already cleared several international regulatory hurdles and is currently tied up in U.S. antitrust litigation.
If that deal is ultimately approved, control of the combined company would shift to David Ellison and the new leadership team.

That doesn’t necessarily mean James Gunn or Peter Safran would be replaced. There’s no indication that such a decision has been made or is even under consideration.
However, major corporate mergers frequently bring new priorities and fresh evaluations of expensive divisions. A new ownership group inheriting Warner Bros.’ film business would almost certainly assess the performance of every major franchise—including DC Studios.
If Man of Tomorrow is a major commercial success, Gunn’s position would likely be strengthened regardless of who occupies the CEO’s office.

But if the film underperforms, the conversation could look very different under David Ellison than it does today under David Zaslav.
For now, Zaslav is making it clear that Warner Bros. Discovery has no intention of changing course. Whether that strategy survives the next Superman film—or even the company’s own pending ownership change—remains one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding the future of DC.
