Is James Cameron Done With Avatar? Legendary Director Details Plans for “Last Act” of His Career

James Cameron may finally be preparing to leave Pandora behind as he considers which stories he wants to tell during the “last act” of his filmmaking career.

While the Avatar films have been among the most financially successful movies in history, they have also been among the most expensive. The technological innovations required to bring Cameron’s vision to life have contributed to lengthy production timelines. These are realities that the director has acknowledged before. What makes Cameron’s latest comments remarkable is that they offer his strongest indication yet that he may be ready to move on.

James Cameron Considers Life After Avatar

The legendary director discussed his future after receiving Canada’s Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement. Cameron acknowledged that the Avatar franchise has dominated his professional life for more than two decades.

“That’s the question of the hour for me,” Cameron said. “There’s been momentum in the Avatar universe for 21 years at this point because we started in 2005. I took a little time off to build a submersible and dive to the deepest spot on the planet, as you do, but I came back to Avatar after that. And it’s been kind of an unbroken continuum.”

Cameron is now evaluating other projects and deciding which ones require him in the director’s chair. Others could instead see him collaborate with different filmmakers as a writer or producer.

“So this is the point where I’m looking at the landscape and asking, ‘What are the other stories I want to tell? How many of them do I need to direct myself versus writing and/or producing with other filmmakers?’” he said.

Last December, Cameron revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he was developing a premise for a new Terminator film. Although he kept specific details under wraps, he said Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic character would not appear. Whether Cameron directs the project or simply produces it, a new Terminator film would allow him to step away from Avatar and return to his roots.

The 71-year-old filmmaker has now explained that he spent the past several weeks mapping out the remainder of his career. He is prioritizing projects according to the positive impact he believes they could have on the world.

“The criterion—I’ve literally mapped this out for myself over the last two weeks—I started with, ‘What will do the most good?’” Cameron said. “I put that in block letters at the top. And I started looking at all the projects I’m most fond of, asking, ‘How’s this going to improve our condition? How’s that going to make the world better for our kids?’”

Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 Remain Uncertain

Cameron stopped short of announcing his retirement or confirming that he is finished with Avatar. However, his comments introduce further uncertainty about Avatar 4 and Avatar 5.

The director previously said that the sequels remain “floating out there,” but acknowledged that their current production model is unsustainable.

“Because they’re hideously expensive and take a long time,” Cameron explained in May. “I want to do them in half the time for two-thirds of the cost. That’s my metric. And so it’s going to take us a year or so to figure out how to do that.”

Disney currently has Avatar 4 scheduled for December 21, 2029, followed by Avatar 5 on December 19, 2031. Scripts for both sequels have reportedly been completed, and portions of the fourth film were shot during production of the previous installments.

However, the most recent entry, 2025’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, underperformed compared to the franchise’s earlier installments. Given the enormous cost of producing the films, Disney may also be reconsidering whether the final two sequels make financial sense.

For now, Cameron appears to be weighing his options.

“I haven’t made those decisions yet,” Cameron said. “I’m still in this liminal state of mapping out… the last act, if you will. And I don’t know if that last act will last a year or 20 years.”
