Reports Indicate Halo Studios Employees Are Being Laid Off

Just one week after the controversial launch of Halo: Campaign Evolved, reports are beginning to emerge that Halo Studios is once again facing layoffs.

While Microsoft has not publicly announced a new round of cuts at the studio, multiple apparent Halo Studios employees have taken to LinkedIn in recent hours announcing they are looking for work, prompting widespread reports that layoffs are currently underway.

Gaming YouTuber Smash JT was among the first to draw attention to the apparent cuts, posting on X that layoffs had begun “rolling through on LinkedIn” alongside screenshots of multiple Halo Studios employees updating their employment status.

“Update: It’s happening. Layoffs are beginning to roll through on LinkedIn for Halo Studios,” Smash siad. “This is just the beginning.”

The post follows an earlier message from Smash JT in which he said he was hearing “unconfirmed reports” that layoffs were taking place before later sharing what appear to be LinkedIn posts from affected employees.

Among the screenshots circulating online are posts from Halo Studios employees discussing their departure from the company and announcing they’re now seeking new opportunities.

One producer, Paul Morris, wrote that after helping ship Halo: Campaign Evolved, they had been informed they were among those affected.

“Today, I learned my time at Halo Studios will be coming to an end following the successful launch of our latest game, Halo: Campaign Evolved,” he said.

Another employee reflected on spending more than six years working on the Halo franchise before unexpectedly finding himself looking for a new position.

Neither employee publicly stated how many people were impacted, and Microsoft has yet to comment on the apparent layoffs.

At the time of publication, the overall size and scope of the reported cuts remain unknown.

Another Blow for Xbox

If confirmed, the reported layoffs would represent yet another difficult chapter for Microsoft’s gaming division.

Halo Studios has already endured multiple rounds of restructuring over the past several years as Microsoft transitioned the franchise away from the Slipspace Engine and toward Unreal Engine 5. The studio also underwent significant leadership changes following the troubled launch of Halo Infinite before rebranding from 343 Industries to Halo Studios.

More broadly, Microsoft announced sweeping job cuts across its gaming business earlier this summer, affecting thousands of employees across Xbox and numerous first-party studios.

Whether the reported Halo Studios layoffs are connected to that larger restructuring or represent a separate round of cuts remains unclear.

A Difficult Look After Launch

The timing is what makes these reports particularly noteworthy.

Halo: Campaign Evolved launched just last week and represented Microsoft’s latest attempt to reset one of Xbox’s most recognizable franchises. Seeing employees reportedly lose their jobs so soon after shipping the game raises obvious questions about whether these layoffs had already been planned, whether the title met Microsoft’s internal expectations, or whether they are simply the latest phase of the company’s broader restructuring.

Right now, there simply aren’t enough confirmed facts to answer those questions.

What can be verified is that multiple apparent Halo Studios employees have publicly indicated they are looking for new work, lending credibility to reports that layoffs are indeed underway.

Should Microsoft issue an official statement—or if additional employees continue posting similar announcements—we’ll update this story accordingly.
