Could President Trump file a lawsuit against Mark Ruffalo for comments he made at the Golden Globes?
Mark Ruffalo didn’t just take a political swipe at President Trump on the Golden Globes red carpet — he may have wandered straight into legally dangerous territory.
During a filmed interview at the 2026 Golden Globes, the Avengers star launched into a tirade against the President of the United States that went far beyond opinion or political rhetoric.
Mark Ruffalo defamed President Trump at the Golden Globes by falsely saying “he’s a convicted r*pist, he’s a ped*phile.”

In addition to calling Trump “the worst human being” and a “convicted felon,” Ruffalo was captured on camera making far more explosive accusations, including labeling Trump a “convicted rap**t and a “ped****le” — two claims that have no basis in any criminal conviction or judicial finding.
Those words matter. A lot.

Because once a celebrity crosses the line from opinion into specific criminal accusations stated as fact, they aren’t just speaking politically anymore — they are stepping into defamation law.
And President Trump has already shown he is more than willing to fight that battle.
What Ruffalo Actually Said at the Golden Globes
Mark Ruffalo stopped for some remarks during his red carpet stop with USA Today at the Golden Globes, where the actor said the following about President Trump.
“The guy is a convicted felon, a convicted rap**t, he’s a ped****le. ,” Ruffalo said. “He’s the worst human being. If we’re relying on this guy’s morality for the most powerful country in the world, then we’re all in a lot of trouble… I love this country, and what I’m seeing here happening is not America.”

Those specific claims were actually edited out of Variety’s coverage of Ruffalo’s comments, which says a lot about legal vulnerability.
Ruffalo also accused Trump of disregarding international law, claimed the United States had illegally invaded Venezuela, and argued that the President was ruling based on “his own morality.”
Those aren’t political critiques. Those are allegations of heinous criminal acts.
Why This Is Legally Dangerous
Under U.S. defamation law, there is a critical distinction between opinion and false statements of fact.
Calling someone “dangerous,” “immoral,” or even “the worst human being” is protected speech. But falsely asserting that a real person committed specific crimes — especially crimes as severe as r**e or child abuse — is a textbook example of defamation if the claims are untrue.

President Trump has never been convicted of r**e. President Trump has never been convicted of being a ped****le.
When Ruffalo used those labels on camera, he wasn’t speculating — he was presenting them as fact.
That is exactly the kind of speech that triggers legal exposure.
Trump Already Won Millions Over Similar Claims
This isn’t theoretical.
In late 2024, President Trump sued ABC News and anchor George Stephanopoulos after the network repeatedly stated on air that Trump had been found liable for “r**e” in the E. Jean Carroll civil case — a legally incorrect description of the jury’s verdict.

ABC ultimately agreed to pay $15 million to Trump’s presidential library, plus $1 million in legal fees, and issued a formal apology and correction.
That case involved a news organization mischaracterizing a civil verdict.
What Ruffalo did was far more reckless: he accused the President of being a “convicted rap**t” and “ped****le” outright, with no court ruling, no verdict, and no evidence to support those claims.
A Celebrity Doesn’t Get a Free Pass
Hollywood often behaves as though political activism gives celebrities immunity from consequences. It doesn’t.
If anything, Ruffalo’s status makes this worse, not better. His statements were:
- Made on camera
- At a major awards event
- To a national media outlet
- Republished and amplified online

That satisfies the publication requirement for defamation, and it establishes a record that could easily be introduced in court.
To win a case, Trump would need to prove Ruffalo acted with “actual malice” — meaning he knew the statements were false or showed reckless disregard for the truth. Accusing someone of such heinous acts without any factual basis is about as reckless as it gets.
Hollywood May Have Finally Overreached
For years, celebrities have hurled increasingly extreme accusations at President Trump with little pushback. But calling the sitting President a “convicted rap**t” and a “ped****le” isn’t activism — it’s a legal gamble.

The sitting president has already demonstrated he is willing to drag media giants into court over far less. If Trump decides to take Mark Ruffalo on in a lawsuit, this could become one of the most high-profile defamation showdowns Hollywood has ever seen.
And this time, the receipts are on video.

Oh, please, please sue! Ruffalo has been an insufferable twat on par with Rosie ever since Trump came down the escalator.
One of the things that would make life worth living is to see Ruffalo get sent to the poorhouse, or prison as an example to all the people who are unjustly throwing around insults about Trump and others in Trump’s orbit.
Sometimes I wonder if these types of people are even American.
He’s a self-centered piece of shit in a whole town full of self-centered pieces of shit. Completely isolated and insulated from real world problems. My twelve year old girl has a better grip on reality than this supposedly adult male. clooney dicrappio deniro h. ford, et all. They’re just different faces of the same shitty person.
I am praying that Trump sues him into poverty.
“Burn ruffalo burn! I feel a riot coming on. First you’re guilty then you’re gone…..”
