The Mysterious Benedict Society, which was booted off Disney+, has found a new home on a Faith-based Amazon-owned streaming service that debuts next month.

If you’ve never heard of the streaming show The Mysterious Benedict Society on Disney+, you’d certainly be forgiven for that. Based on the well-received children’s books bearing the same title, the show starring comedy actor Tony Hale (Arrested Development, Sketch, Chuck) never received the popular reception on Disney’s streaming service as the books have.

Hale played both Mr. Benedict and his twin brother, Dr. Curtain, on the show. While Disney doesn’t report their streaming numbers well, according to USTVDB the show pulled in a remarkably low audience of just 84,000 viewers for it’s debut on November 29, 2022. It never really picked up steam, so the series was removed from Disney+ back in May 2023 as part of some cost-cutting measures to improve profitability. After that it ended up as just another tax write off.

From Books to Disney, The Mysterious Benedict Society Went From Pop to Flop!

The Mysterious Benedict Society book series by Trenton Lee is quite popular. The first book has an average rating of about 4.37 out of 5 on Goodreads, with over 19,000 ratings. The first book back in 2007 was a New York Times best seller! Its main readership is ages 8–14, but like Harry Potter or A Series of Unfortunate Events, it has a strong following among adults too. It often makes recommended reading lists for advanced young readers because of its clever puzzles, wordplay, and themes of friendship, ethics, and teamwork.

With this in mind, it’s not a surprise Disney hoped to translate this success into a Disney+ series, clearly hoping to catch the same enthusiasm for their platform. However, with little marketing plus being overshadowed by the likes of Marvel and Star Wars on the platform, it simply never found it’s audience on Disney Plus. To say it flopped would be an understatement.

New Platform; New Life for The Society

The “Wonder Project” is a brand new faith based streaming service to launch under Amazon Prime video on October 5th, 2025. The emergence of Wonder Project reflects a wider trend of faith-based content expanding in mainstream entertainment.

Studios like Pure Flix have built sizable subscriber bases, while other series like The Chosen have achieved crossover popularity, even among non-religious viewers. With this in mind it’s no surprise that at launch, Wonder Project aims to have a stocked library. That’s why they’ve picked up The Mysterious Benedict Society from Disney+ and it will make it available at launch.

In addition to TMBS, more than 1,000 hours of curated movies and TV shows will be available on the new service on October 5th, including beloved titles like Mr. Bean, Pride & Prejudice, The Sound of Music, Dead Poets Society, Rudy, Friday Night Lights, and Jesus Revolution, among others. The new service will be available to Amazon Prime members for a cost of $8.99 per month.
