With Election Day approaching, Disney has formally asked YouTube TV to restore access to ABC following a carriage dispute that removed the network from the platform late last week.

The dispute, which began October 30, centers on renewal terms and pricing. YouTube TV pulled ABC, ESPN, and other Disney-owned networks after the two sides failed to reach an agreement. According to Variety’s reporting, Disney is seeking higher carriage fees, while Google — YouTube TV’s parent company — has pushed for new programming tiers that could allow subscribers to opt out of certain networks.

In a statement, Disney said it has requested temporary reinstatement specifically for election coverage.

“Despite the impasse that led to the current blackout, we have asked YouTube TV to restore ABC for Election Day so subscribers have access to the information they rely on,” Disney said. “We believe in putting the public interest first and hope YouTube TV will take this small step for their customers while we continue to work toward a fair agreement.”

YouTube TV did not provide comment to Variety before publication.

Timeline of Events

Here’s the timeline of events that led to Disney petitioning YouTube TV to allow ABC back on the air for Election Day.

  • October 30th: YouTube TV removes Disney channels after negotiations stall
  • Following days: Disney activates alternative access options for some content, including airing ESPN’s “College GameDay” on social platforms and its mobile app without a cable subscription
  • November 4th: Election Day in the United States, when most broadcasters will carry live results and analysis

ABC News coverage remains available through ABC News Live and digital platforms, but not through YouTube TV’s linear feed.

Subscriber Impact

The blackout affects YouTube TV’s base plan subscribers. The service costs $82.99 per month. YouTube TV has said it will provide a one-time $20 credit if Disney networks remain unavailable for an extended period, according to the same reporting.

Alternative Sources and Limited Leverage

While The Walt Disney Company is calling for YouTube TV to reinstate the ABC channel ahead of Election Day, its bargaining power appears more constrained than public statements imply.

For starters, ABC—though a major network—is not the only source of election-night news available to YouTube TV subscribers. The platform still carries major networks such as CBS, NBC, Fox and PBS in many markets, each of which offers live coverage of election returns, analysis, and local affiliate feeds.

Moreover, digital streaming and mobile access broaden options further: the ABC News Live app, websites, social-media streams and competing internet-TV services mean viewers have alternatives beyond the YouTube TV linear feed.

At the same time, YouTube TV has made public its view that Disney’s demands in this negotiation are designed not only to raise fees but to advantage Disney’s own competing services — notably Hulu + Live TV and Fubo. According to YouTube TV, Disney has “used the threat of a blackout … as a negotiating tactic to force deal terms that would raise prices on our customers.”

That claim suggests Disney’s leverage is tempered by the fact that its absence from YouTube TV doesn’t render its competitors powerless, and that viewers may shift to other platforms or networks rather than wait indefinitely for restoration.

In short: though Disney’s request has public-service optics, from a business standpoint the negotiating power doesn’t tilt overwhelmingly in its favor.

Broader Industry Context

Disney is not the first media company to enter a carriage dispute with Google. Paramount, Fox, and NBCUniversal all recently negotiated new distribution agreements with YouTube TV, some narrowly avoiding similar blackouts. Univision and TelevisaUnivision networks, however, remain unavailable after failing to reach terms earlier this year.

This standoff comes as streaming platforms and traditional broadcasters navigate rising content costs, shifting ad markets, and consumer pushback on subscription increases. Election coverage typically draws one of the largest live television audiences in the United States, giving both sides strong incentive to reach an agreement quickly.

What it Means for Viewers

For now, YouTube TV subscribers who rely on ABC for election night reporting may need to access ABC News Live or other news outlets as a fallback. Whether the channel returns before votes are counted remains uncertain, with both companies continuing negotiations.

Woke on woke crime. Let them fight.

Seriously, Hollywoke needs to wake up and realize YouTube is not the be-all, end-all of the modern age. Hacks like Colbert and Kimmel think they’re going to make it big on the platform. They need to look at Brie Larson, Will Smith, and others who got every possible boost they could…and still failed miserably at attracting viewers. If you’re not entertaining and appealing to the 18-54 demographic, you’re going to be a niche channel at best and a total failure at worst.

By the same token, Hollywoke execs think YT views = popularity and $$. Reality? YT counts five seconds as a “view” and takes a huge portion of the shrinking ad revenue. Forget what you see on Socialblade.com, the reality is most creators get less than half of the lowest listed estimates a month at most.
