The new Haunted Mansion gift shop—Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond—is making waves in the news, though, once again, not positively. Following a significant flooding incident that exposed serious design flaws, Disney has decided to redesign the store to ensure that it can better withstand future challenges and maintain its aesthetic alongside the main attraction.
Opening of Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond
Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond, the newly designed Haunted Mansion gift shop, officially opened on December 23, 2024. Located directly adjacent to the attraction, the shop is thematically tied to the mansion’s iconic seance room, with a design that’s supposed to evoke the ghostly ambiance of Madame Leota herself.

The store’s decor features several nods to the ride, including an original chandelier from the Haunted Mansion attraction and a portrait of Leota Toombs, the Imagineer who inspired the character of Madame Leota.
However, the store’s opening was not without controversy.
Early Criticisms and Controversies
Upon opening, the shop faced immediate backlash from fans. Rather than an intricately themed Haunted Mansion shop that would blend seamlessly into the surrounding New Orleans Square, Disney opted for a more utilitarian design. The result was a generic structure that more resembled a green barn than a Disney attraction, detracting from the immersive experience that is a hallmark of Disney’s park design. What’s more, there are allegations that the structure was part of a a pre-designed purchased kit, like a shed from Home Depot.

Many Disney fans pointed out that AI-generated artwork had been used for the shop’s displays. This came as a shock, as the lack of traditional hand-painted artwork that they’d come to expect from Disney’s high standards was evidently missing. Following this widespread criticism, Disneyland responded by removing the AI-generated images. Imagineering creative lead Kim Irvine claimed that the AI art was simply a placeholder and that they had always intended to include original hand-painted artwork in line with the park’s commitment to quality craftsmanship.
The controversy drew attention to the growing trend of AI usage in Disney merchandise, highlighting concerns about the future direction of the company’s artistic vision.
Design Flaws Leading to Flooding
Just six weeks after its grand opening, the Haunted Mansion gift shop encountered a serious issue: flooding. A half-inch of rain triggered water seepage into the shop, leading to a significant amount of damage to merchandise and the store’s infrastructure. The flood led to the closure of the store temporarily, and Disney employed sandbags at the entrance to prevent further water ingress.

The flooding exposed a major design flaw that had been overlooked during the shop’s construction. Former Disney Imagineer Jim Shull criticized the shop’s engineering, pointing out significant oversights in drainage and waterproofing. The incident was a wake-up call for the company, revealing that the shop’s infrastructure could not withstand the natural elements that could occur in Disneyland’s outdoor environment.
Response and Repairs
In response, crews began replacing concrete on the east side of Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond gift shop in early February of 2025. This work aimed to improve drainage and mitigate the risk of future flooding, reinforcing the shop’s infrastructure to better manage water flow.
While the shop remained open during the repair process, certain exterior props and theming were temporarily removed to accommodate the work. In addition to these repairs, Disney made modifications to the shop’s exterior, including the addition of drainage solutions and other functional elements, contributing to the overall resilience and aesthetic of the space.

The temporary disruption highlighted the importance of engineering considerations in maintaining Disney’s immersive environments. Considerations that had until now gone overlooked. The focus on improving drainage and addressing design flaws has likely served as a valuable lesson for Disney Imagineering, reinforcing the need for careful planning to ensure the longevity and durability of the park’s infrastructure.
Broader Implications for Disney Imagineering
The flooding incident and its aftermath have sparked broader concerns about the direction of Disney Imagineering. Some critics have voiced worries that cost-cutting measures and declining attention to detail may be impacting the quality of new park developments. While Disney has long been known for its meticulous attention to detail, incidents like the flooding of the shop and AI artwork raise questions about the company’s commitment to maintaining high standards in all aspects of its design work.

The situation also casts a spotlight on the challenges faced by Disney as it balances the demands of creating immersive experiences with the practical requirements of maintaining the park’s infrastructure. With flooding affecting the guest experience, there are concerns that Disney’s iconic reputation for top-tier design could be at risk if similar issues continue to arise.
Final Thoughts
The redesign of Madame Leota’s Somewhere Beyond is more than just a repair job. It’s a testament to the importance of Disney maintaining its legacy of quality, craftsmanship, and attention to detail. While the shop’s flooding incident may have caused some setbacks, it also presents an opportunity for Disney to learn from its mistakes and ensure that future projects meet the high standards that Disney fans expect.

Reputation? I’m pretty certain Disney’s reputation is already irreversibly damaged. Flooding from a simple rainstorm is something humans figured out how to prevent since they started building their own homes in places that get rain. It’s one of the first things any architect worth their salt takes into consideration when designing a building.
This speaks of things far worse than one building failing. It begs the question of how safe Disney’s parks are in their entirety. Did the Imagineers just not know what they were doing or did an executive make the changes in a misguided effort to save money? I’m actually leaning towards the latter because of personal experience with “executive decisions.”
What are the odds they fired the white architects?
