Failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton attempted to become relevant by attaching herself to what appears to be a coordinated marketing campaign by the Oscars to gin up controversy surrounding the event by allegedly snubbing Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig in the Best Actress and Best Director categories for Barbie.

Margot Robbie as Stereotypical Barbie in Barbie (2023), Warner Bros. Pictures
Clinton took to X where she or more than likely a staffer of some kind wrote, “Greta & Margot, While it can sting to win the box office but not take home the gold, your millions of fans love you. You’re both so much more than Kenough. #HillaryBarbie.”

Clinton’s commentary came after numerous women and feminist men shared their displeasure that Gerwig and Robbie did not receive Oscar nominations for Best Actress and Best Director. While they did not receive nominations the film was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Costume Design, Best Original Song, Best Picture, Best Production Design, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
One user wrote, “The fact that the supporting characters got oscar nods but the woman who played barbie herself got nothing is not sitting right with me…”
She added in a subsequent post, “im not even that mad about this snub (i survived the babylon snub) but the fact that they got recognition and she didnt is what seems to be unfair to me.”

However, in another post, she added, “ken getting more oscar nominations than barbie in a barbie movie… the irony is just ridiculous.”

Jake Tyler lamented, “The Oscars not recognizing Greta Gerwig or Margot Robbie is insanity. 2023 was one of the best years for female filmmakers and they deserve, at the very least, a nomination for their hard work. Barbie f***ing rocked!”

Another user wrote, “I don’t pay much attention to award shows. But Ryan Gosling getting a nomination and Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig NOT getting nominations feels like something happening in the Barbie movie to further illustrate the point of the Barbie movie.”

It wasn’t just people on social media, as noted above it appears to also be a marketing plot for the Oscars without Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, as both Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu, who acted in Barbie chimed in as well.
Liu wrote, “Being involved in a small way gave me a window into just how hard Greta and Margot had to fight to get Barbie made, and how flawlessly they executed. Together they started a movement, touched the world and reinvigorated the cinema. They deserve everything. They ARE everything.”

Gosling added, “I am extremely honored to be nominated by my colleagues alongside such remarkable artists in a year of so many great films. And I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m also incredibly honored and proud that it’s for portraying a plastic doll named Ken. But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film.”
“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement,” he continued.
Gosling concluded, “Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees. Having said that I am so happy for America Ferrara and the other incredible artists who contributed their talents to making this such a groundbreaking film.”

Film and TV review site Criticless shared his thoughts that the entire controversy that Clinton attached herself to is a marketing ploy.
He posited, “Has anyone considered that the Barbie ‘controversy’ is a marketing ploy to draw attention to the Oscars 2024, which nobody cares about anymore? It’s also quite suspect that the issue mirrors the exact heavy-handed messaging of the film; sounds like excellent marketing all around.”

What do you make of Clinton’s comments and the idea that the whole controversy is a marketing stunt to gin up interest for the Oscars?
