Margot Robbie appeared to cast doubt on the idea that Warner Bros. Pictures and Mattel will team up again for a sequel to Barbie.

During an appearance at Variety’s Power of Women red carpet, Robbie spoke to the Associated Press about the possibility of more Barbie movies.

She said, “I think We put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something. It was like [director] Greta [Gerwig] put everything into this movie. So I can’t imagine what would be next.”

Not only did Robbie discuss whether or not the film might get a sequel, but she also shared her thoughts on what the film’s box office success means, “I’d say the biggest takeaway for me is that original films can still hit huge at the box office. It doesn’t have to be a sequel, or a prequel, or a remake. It can be totally original and still be big. Given a big budget to do that and just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants, which is I think, you know, a misconception that a lot of people still have.”

She added, “It’s really important that Barbie did well. As much as it is nice, it’s also really important that it does well so people can also in future have big original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly.”

Barbie dominated the box office over the summer. The film had a monster $162 million domestic opening weekend. It went on to gross $636.1 million overall at the domestic box office and another $804.4 million internationally for a global gross of $1.4 billion.

The film had two of the highest grossing weekends of the summer as well. It’s opening weekend on July 1st, it grossed the aforementioned $162 million. That currently is the highest grossing weekend of the year.  Its second weekend where it grossed $93 million is the 7th highest grossing weekend of the year.

The only other film to have two spots in the ten highest grossing weekends of 2023 list was The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It holds the second and 9th highest grossing weekends.

Barbie held the number one spot at the box office for four weekends in a row. It was eventually dethroned by Blue Beetle in the middle of August.

Barbie is currently the highest grossing film of the year at the domestic box office. It also has the most tickets sold. It sold 60.4 million tickets. The next closest is The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $574.9 million domestically and sold 54.5 million tickets.

The gulf between Barbie and the 10th highest grossing domestic film is huge. Sound of Freedom currently sits in that 10th spot and it grossed $184.1 million domestically and sold 17.4 million tickets.

To put in perspective just how monstrous Barbie was, the film’s distributor Warner Bros. has only sold 109.2 million tickets across all of its films in 2023 and only grossed $1.1 billion domestically.

Barbie makes up over 55% of all tickets sold for Warner Bros. domestically. Its domestic gross also covers more than 55% of Warner Bros. grosses for the year.

While Robbie indicates they might not do a sequel, it’s hard to imagine that David Zaslav and the executives at Warner Bros. Discovery as well as Mattel will not create a sequel to this film given just how well it performed at the box office.
