The killer animatronics are back! Blumhouse has officially released the first trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, confirming the sequel will hit theaters on December 5, 2025.
Once again directed by Emma Tammi and based on Scott Cawthon’s wildly popular horror game series, the film picks up one year after the terrifying events at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. And this time, the nightmare has only gotten weirder.
A Town That Turned Tragedy Into Celebration
According to Cosmic Book News, the sequel sees Mike (Josh Hutcherson) and Vanessa (Elizabeth Lail) doing their best to protect young Abby (Piper Rubio) from the truth behind the Freddy Fazbear incidents. But their efforts are quickly undone when Abby sneaks out during a bizarre new town tradition: Fazfest, a community event meant to “honor” the location’s haunted history with carnival rides, cosplay contests, and animatronic-themed merchandise.

Unfortunately, this glossy coat of commercialization doesn’t change the fact that something evil still lingers. Abby’s attempt to reconnect with her old robotic friends—Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy—sets off a terrifying new mystery tied to the earliest days of Freddy’s.
The trailer teases glimpses of a new, more sinister location (possibly an underground facility or abandoned sister site) that suggests the sequel may be drawing from Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Sister Location, two of the games with the most expansive lore.
Familiar Faces and a Few New Ones
Alongside Hutcherson, Lail, Rubio, and Theodus Crane returning as Jeremiah, FNAF 2 brings back Matthew Lillard as the enigmatic William Afton. The character’s cryptic role in the first film left fans speculating about his deeper connection to the animatronics—and the trailer suggests Afton’s twisted legacy is far from over.

The cast also welcomes some new blood, including Freddy Carter (Shadow and Bone), Wayne Knight (Jurassic Park), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters), Skeet Ulrich (Scream). Each actor brings horror pedigree or fan appeal, which is right in line with Blumhouse’s strategy of mixing seasoned genre stars with up-and-coming talent.
Emma Tammi returns as director, with a script from Cawthon himself. Producing are Jason Blum and Cawthon, with executive producers Beatriz Sequeira, Christopher Warner, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Tammi also involved.
Can the Sequel Match the First Film’s Success?
Released in October 2023, the original Five Nights at Freddy’s pulled in a stunning $80 million in its opening weekend and went on to gross nearly $300 million worldwide. That’s no small feat for a video game adaptation, especially one that launched day-and-date on streaming.

Critics were divided, but fans turned out in droves, praising the film’s respect for the lore and its unapologetically creepy aesthetic. Animatronics created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop helped the film stand apart from typical CGI horror fare, and that same practical approach appears to be returning in the sequel.
Blumhouse and Universal clearly see FNAF as a long-term franchise. And with the lore-heavy structure of the games, there’s plenty of room for spin-offs, prequels, and deeper dives into lesser-known characters. None of these have appeared on screen yet, so there will still be plenty of material if a third movie gets announced.

The FNAF fandom—made up of longtime players, lore theorists, and younger horror fans—remains one of the most active online. Their investment isn’t just casual; it’s obsessive, with entire YouTube channels dedicated to unraveling each game’s secrets. Blumhouse is definitely leaning into that fan energy.
And so far, it seems the fans will not be disappointed.
