World of Warcraft has been through plenty of controversies over the years, but few cut to the heart of the game’s identity like the latest debate over Blood Elves and their new design that many find to be ugly.

Once considered the shining face of the Horde, the race that helped balance WoW’s faction divide is now at the center of a firestorm. A familiar voice has stepped into the fray — former World of Warcraft team lead Mark Kern, also known in the gaming community as “Grummz.” His criticism? Blizzard has made the Blood Elves, once glamorous and aspirational, look like they’ve been smacked “with the AAA ugly stick.”

Who Is “Grummz”? A Deep Dive on Mark Kern’s Impact on Gaming

To understand why Kern’s comments matter, you have to look at his track record. Kern joined Blizzard in 1997, working as an Associate Producer on StarCraft and later as Producer on StarCraft 64 and Diablo II. By the early 2000s, he had risen to Team Lead on World of Warcraft, guiding its development through launch and helping to set the tone for the most successful MMORPG of all time.

Kern left Blizzard in 2005 to co-found Red 5 Studios, where he oversaw the ambitious MMO Firefall as CEO and later Chief Creative Officer. Years later, he would re-enter the WoW conversation as one of the most vocal advocates for World of Warcraft Classic, supporting the Nostalrius private server petition and personally helping deliver it to Blizzard leadership. His fingerprints are all over WoW’s history — which is why his critique of Blood Elves is hitting a nerve.

Kern’s Revelation: Why Blood Elves Were Beautiful

In his viral post reacting to the Midnight trailer, Kern didn’t just mock the new look — he explained why Blood Elves were designed the way they were in the first place. According to Kern, when WoW launched, the Horde faction lacked aesthetic appeal. In Korea, players avoided the Horde almost entirely because there were no conventionally attractive options.

The solution was deliberate. “We made the Blood Elves beautiful on purpose,” Kern explained, noting that their elegance and allure weren’t accidental — they were a strategic design choice to make the Horde appealing worldwide. It worked. Blood Elves became one of the most-played races in WoW’s history, saving the Horde from being overshadowed by the Alliance’s more marketable races.

That history makes today’s controversy sting even more. For Kern, Blizzard isn’t just changing the look of a character model — they’re undoing a design decision that helped make WoW the phenomenon it became.

The Trailer Backlash

The World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion reveal should have been a celebration. Instead, it immediately lit up social media with side-by-side comparisons between the glamorous elves of The Burning Crusade and the plain, worn-down models from 2025. Instead of aspirational fantasy, fans saw something dull and lifeless.

The numbers back up the sentiment. Within six hours of going live, the reveal trailer on IGN’s YouTube channel pulled in 2.3k dislikes compared to 1.8k likes. That ratio tells its own story: fans aren’t buying what Blizzard is selling.

Kern’s Criticism: “The AAA Ugly Stick”

Kern summed up what players were feeling with one phrase: “The Blood Elf in the trailer got hit with the AAA ugly stick.”

It wasn’t just a quip — it was an indictment of a growing trend across the industry. As Kern sees it, developers are stripping away the beauty and aspirational quality that once defined characters in Western RPGs.

The Broader Trend: Blood Elves, Warcraft, and Ugly Character Design

The controversy around Warcraft and Blood Elves ties into a larger debate about modern gaming and perceived “ugly” female character designs. Critics argue that Western studios are moving away from conventionally attractive designs, opting instead for “average” or “realistic” (some say ugly) characters. Developers often justify this as inclusivity or authenticity. Fans, however, see it as a deliberate move to erase beauty from the fantasy space.

This isn’t just about looks. Fantasy games have always been about escape — larger-than-life heroes, striking designs, and aspirational worlds. To many, making Blood Elves ugly in World of Warcraft undermines the very escapism that drew millions of players to Azeroth in the first place.

East vs. West: A Cultural Divide

It’s no coincidence that the divide is stark between Western and Eastern MMOs. In Japan and Korea, games like Final Fantasy XIV, Final Fantasy VII Remake, and Black Desert Online continue to thrive by embracing beauty, glamour, and high fantasy aesthetics. Meanwhile, Western studios like Blizzard are increasingly pulling away from that tradition.

The results are obvious. While WoW continues to produce expansions, its cultural dominance has faded. The decision to strip away the Blood Elves’ iconic allure may only accelerate that decline.

Fans Feel Betrayed

For longtime players, Blood Elves aren’t just another race — they’re a symbol of WoW’s golden age. They represent the moment when Blizzard understood its audience and designed with mass appeal in mind. Watching that be dismantled feels to many like watching Blizzard dismantle the very essence of what made WoW great.

Kern’s words resonated precisely because they put into sharp language what so many already sensed. If even the race designed to be beautiful is no longer allowed to be, what does that say about the future of Warcraft?

Conclusion: Undoing What Once Worked

World of Warcraft has weathered plenty of storms, but the controversy over so-called “ugly” blood elves cuts to its core. Nearly two decades ago, making Blood Elves beautiful wasn’t just an artistic choice — it was a strategic masterstroke that kept the Horde alive and made WoW a global sensation.

Now Blizzard appears determined to erase that history. Fans have noticed, and they’re pushing back hard. The Midnight trailer’s dislikes shows exactly where the community stands.

Kern’s warning may sound like a joke — “the AAA ugly stick” — but it’s also a wake-up call. If Blizzard (and AAA gaming in general) keeps stripping away the fantasy and beauty that once defined its worlds, then maybe World of Warcraft is already past its prime.

Some Loser

Glad to see I’m not just seeing things. I watched the trailer out of morbid curiosity as a former WoW player who quit during the first patch of the most recent expansion and, my God, they ruined Liadrin, the female blood elf in the trailer, but then you have Xal’atath, a being of the Void that is inhabiting the corpse of an elf from 3 expansions ago, and you see an immaculate face in comparison and she’s the villain. The trailer itself gave me “girlboss” vibes too as Lor’themar ends up incapacitated until Liadrin returns after praying for salvation in the face of whatever the hell is happening in the trailer so I’m guessing they’re going to kill him and make her the leader of the Blood Elves. Either way, I’m glad I quit giving them money for this slop.

Ugly, ugly, ugly. That’s all I see anymore. The marvels. Pig face from the worst of us. The way everyone looked and was dressed in that stupid Minecraft movie I took my son to. Karen Gillian in the 3rd Guardians. So many more. Ugly, ugly, ugly. All by design from all the uglies employed as the higher-ups.

Looks like some blood elf crossed with orc. Also, what is with the bearded female dwarves. Was that ever a thing in Warcraft, or are they trying to badly imitate Tolkien.
