Halo composer Marty O’Donnell has been removed from an upcoming SacAnime convention after staff members objected to political comments that were inaccurately portrayed as a call to persecute LGBTQ+ people.

O’Donnell had been scheduled to participate in a reunion celebrating the 25th anniversary of Halo during SacAnime Summer 2026. The convention will take place over Labor Day weekend at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento, California.

“I’m very disappointed that SacAnime has disinvited me from a Halo 25 reunion at their conference next month,” O’Donnell announced on X. “If you thought we defeated Cancel Culture in 2024, guess again!”

The timing of the cancellation is notable. Not only is O’Donnell an important figure within the Halo gaming community, but he is also a Republican congressional candidate endorsed by President Donald Trump.

SacAnime Staff Objected to O’Donnell’s Appearance

The former Bungie composer included a screenshot of a message explaining why the invitation had apparently been rescinded.

“The promoter for SacAnime has shared that his LGBTQ staff does not feel comfortable if you attend the event,” the message read. “Based on your recently reported statements of the political campaign, they have to rescinded [sic] their invitation to not cause any further staff upset.”

SacAnime has since removed O’Donnell from its website and deleted social media posts promoting his appearance.

Just two days earlier, Jen Taylor, the voice actress behind Cortana, posted a video on Instagram expressing her enthusiasm about the upcoming event and reuniting with other members of the Halo team. She gave a special mention to O’Donnell as “the man behind the music” and the person responsible for selecting the game’s voice cast.

Now, it appears that O’Donnell will be excluded from the reunion.

Political Account Misrepresented O’Donnell’s Comments

The controversy appears to stem from remarks O’Donnell made while discussing what he considers an ideological threat to Western civilization.

“Talk about an existential threat, this is where we are right now,” he said during an appearance on The WDW Pro Show. “We are on the cliff looking down into the abyss. And the abyss is Marxism, it’s anti-Western philosophy. There’s a weird alliance of all these groups who like to pretend they’re oppressed. The LGBTQ+ people, the Islamists, the Marxists, they’re all together now.”

Those remarks were subsequently shared on July 17 by Headquarters, a progressive social media operation that evolved from Kamala HQ, the former vice president’s campaign account.

“UNEARTHED: Trump-endorsed Nevada GOP candidate Marty O’Donnell calls for persecuting LGBTQ+ people and treating them as an ‘existential threat,’” the account claimed.

However, O’Donnell did not call for the persecution of LGBTQ+ people in the clip. He identified Marxism and anti-Western philosophy as the “abyss” and “existential threat,” while describing LGBTQ+ activists as part of a broader political alliance. Nothing in the shared comments advocated punishing LGBTQ+ people, depriving them of their rights, or otherwise persecuting them, despite Headquarters’ inflammatory framing.

Marty O’Donnell Responds to SacAnime Cancellation

O’Donnell responded to the cancellation in a statement provided to That Park Place and Geeks + Gamers.

“In January, I was invited to attend a Halo reunion at SacAnime over Labor Day weekend in Sacramento, CA. I was excited to attend with so many stars, including Jen Taylor and Steve Downs, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Halo with all of our fans. They even asked me to record a video promoting my attendance two weeks ago.

After SacAnime made numerous announcements of my attendance over this last weekend, I was told I was being disinvited because I called Marxism an existential threat. They have removed me from their website and deleted all their posts on social media promoting my appearance.

My existential threat comment has been twisted by my political opponents a lot over the last few weeks and anyone who saw the video knows that to be true. That is why I know it’s not why I have been pulled from SacAnime. I was pulled because I am a Republican candidate for office.

Funny enough, SacAnime’s decision proves my point. Silencing the opposition is a key component of Marxism and that is one reason why Marxism is an existential threat to our country.

I genuinely believed we had put an end to Cancel Culture after the 2024 election but that was just the end to what AOC called “Woke 1” earlier this week. Woke 2 is here and it is just as eager to silence and destroy conservatives as Woke 1.

Unfortunately for them, I can’t be silenced. I will continue to use my voice to speak out against the threats our country faces, especially from Marxists who seek to destroy the United States.”

O’Donnell won Nevada’s Republican primary in June and will face Democratic Rep. Susie Lee in November. President Donald Trump endorsed his campaign, describing the composer as a “World-Class Composer and Entrepreneur.”

The political context makes the misrepresentation especially consequential. Headquarters is not merely an entertainment account criticizing a celebrity’s opinions. It grew from a Democratic presidential campaign operation and accused the opposing party’s congressional nominee of advocating persecution without quoting any such demand.

SacAnime’s Decision Raises Questions

According to O’Donnell, SacAnime was still anticipating his appearance only two weeks ago. Taylor was also promoting the reunion just days before the convention disinvited him.

For O’Donnell, the incident supports his broader argument that certain political factions seek to silence their opposition. Although SacAnime has every right to determine who appears at its event, those decisions should be based on what a guest actually said rather than a political account’s distorted summary.

O’Donnell expressed an opinion about Marxism and the political alliances he believes support it. He did not call for LGBTQ+ people to be persecuted. By treating those two assertions as interchangeable, his critics transformed a political disagreement into an accusation that the available evidence does not support.
