Warner Bros. Discovery executives have described the company’s upcoming Harry Potter television series as “the streaming event of the decade,” according to remarks made during a recent press event tied to the expansion of HBO Max in Europe.
The statement came from JB Perrette, president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros. Discovery, during a media briefing connected to the launch of HBO Max in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Perrette characterized the series as a central pillar of the company’s long-term streaming strategy. He suggested the show would play a significant role in attracting and retaining subscribers as the company competes in a crowded global streaming market.
Perette’s Statements
Perette made his comments after visiting the set at Leavesden Studios in London. He was reportedly quite impressed by what he saw.
“The scope of the production, the detail, meticulousness of what they’re going through and what they’ve built takes theatrical to just a whole different level,” he said. “And so when you think of the love of that franchise and what you can do in a series — can go deeper, can tell more of the story, can tell more of the pieces that you didn’t get to capture in a two hour movie – Casey [Bloys, HBO Max boss] doesn’t like it when I say this, but I’m gonna say it anyway. I really think this is the streaming event of the decade.”

He explained that the series will be able to explore more, with each book having an entire season.
Perette said the series “will be certainly the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max, and arguably, I think, possibly in streaming period, there’s no other series that can be anywhere close to that.”
Background on the Television Adaptation
The Harry Potter television project was announced in April 2023 as part of the rebranding of Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming platform. The company confirmed that the series would adapt J.K. Rowling’s seven novels, with each book serving as the basis for a separate season.

Warner Bros. Discovery described the show as a long-term production intended to span many years. If fully realized, the series would run for a decade or longer. HBO is producing the project, consistent with its focus on multi-season scripted programming.
Production Timeline and Creative Team
The series is currently expected to premiere in 2027. Francesca Gardiner is serving as showrunner, and Mark Mylod is directing multiple episodes. Both have worked on prior HBO productions.
Casting announcements began in late 2025. Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore.

The casting rollout has not been without controversy. In particular, the decision to race swap the role of Severus Snape — with Paapa Essiedu stepping into the part — has sparked intense debate among longtime fans of the franchise. Critics argue that Snape’s physical description in J.K. Rowling’s books is well-established and closely tied to both his on-page characterization and Alan Rickman’s iconic film portrayal.
Supporters of the casting, meanwhile, have framed the move as a fresh interpretive take for a new adaptation. The divide reflects broader tensions surrounding how closely the HBO series will adhere to established source material as it reimagines the Wizarding World for television.
Legacy of the Film Franchise
The original Harry Potter film series ran from 2001 to 2011 and consisted of eight films. The franchise generated more than $7.7 billion in worldwide box office revenue.
