In a recent interview with The New York Times, controversial Twitch streamer Hasan Piker said that he is “pro stealing.” While it was not a direct call to engage in petty theft, Piker’s framing suggests that doing so can be viewed as a symbolic act of balancing the scales in what he sees as an unfair society.

Piker’s justification of “microlooting”—taking small items from large corporations—has sparked a broader debate about social statements, theft, and morality.
The Interview and Initial Comments
The comments came while Hasan Piker and Jia Tolentino, a writer for The New Yorker, were seated for an interview with NYT opinion culture editor Nadja Spiegelman.
When asked if either of them had ever stolen from Whole Foods, Tolentino said, “Yes. And I have, under very specific circumstances. I will say, I think that stealing from a big box store—I’ll just state my platform—it’s neither very significant as a moral wrong, nor is it significant in any way as protest or direct action.”

Piker did not immediately answer the question directly, but he went a step further. “I’m pro stealing from big corporations,” Hassan Piker said, “because they steal quite a bit more from their own workers.” Noting that self-checkout automation increases the room for error—or theft—he downplayed the seriousness of taking small items. “It’s actually factored in,” he explained.
“They still end up having increased profit margins, because they no longer have to pay the cashiers that they used to hire, as opposed to this automated system, knowing full well that people are still going to be able to steal a lot more efficiently, as a matter of fact, through the automated process,” Piker concluded.
Expanding the Argument
Considering the larger picture, Spiegelman asked Hasan Piker if there would be consequences if everyone adopted his pro stealing philosophy. “Yeah, chaos. Full chaos,” Piker said. “Let’s go.” Piker added that he would discourage stealing from the Zohran Mamdani-run, city-owned grocery stores in New York because he feels “like that’s taxpayer-funded, it’s union labor, and the prices are also adjusted regardless.”

Later, Piker admitted that he does not actually steal things himself. As a child, he was punished by his father for stealing and hasn’t been able to do it since. “I’m just saying that I personally don’t really care,” he said. “If someone needs the food; they should absolutely steal it.”
Online Reaction and Broader Implications
Users online were quick to point out the irony of Hasan Piker being pro stealing in the case of Whole Foods. As a game streamer, much of Piker’s income comes through Twitch, a platform owned by Amazon, which also owns Whole Foods.

He’s literally telling people it’s OK to steal from his employers.
Someone high up at Amazon should do something about this.

Ultimately, Hasan Piker may be pro stealing, but he still operates within—and benefits from—the same systems he criticizes. While he expresses support for petty theft in certain contexts, his broader political views and lifestyle invite debate about where the line between critique and contradiction is drawn.
The “full chaos” he referenced may resonate with his audience as a kind of romantic ideal. In practice, it raises more grounded questions about consistency, responsibility, morality, and how far rhetoric should extend into real-world behavior.
