After months of rumors and carefully worded denials, Hayley Atwell is officially returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel Studios confirmed during its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con that Atwell will reprise her role as Peggy Carter. However, the studio stopped short of revealing whether she will play the original Agent Carter, the super-powered Captain Carter, or another version of the character.

In an interview following the announcement, Atwell expressed her appreciation for fans who remain invested in the love story between Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter.

“You can’t really have Steve without Peggy,” she added.

Hayley Atwell Previously Denied Her Return

Atwell’s involvement was first reported by Deadline in December 2024. At the time, the report remained unverified, and Marvel declined to comment. The following May, Atwell herself cast doubt on the claim while promoting Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

When a Collider interviewer mentioned her expected return, Atwell responded, “Really? Who… on Reddit? Who’s doing that? Who’s saying that?”

Speaking after this weekend’s official announcement, Atwell suggested that she had specific goals for her latest return.

“I always want Peggy to have something different to do,” she said. “We have that in this. It’s such an existential epic of a movie. You see Peggy in a very different light responding to that.”

What Does Peggy Carter’s Return Mean?

Atwell first portrayed Peggy Carter in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. She later returned for several MCU movies and the Agent Carter television series before voicing Captain Carter in Marvel’s animated What If…?

Captain Carter received the Super Soldier Serum instead of Steve Rogers. A live-action version of the character was later killed by Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It remains unclear which version of Peggy Carter will appear in Avengers: Doomsday, although many believe the main timeline character is the most likely.

Avengers: Endgame appeared to give Peggy and Steve a definitive conclusion. After returning the Infinity Stones, Steve remained in the past and reunited with Peggy, finally sharing the dance they had been denied decades earlier.

The Steve Rogers teaser for Avengers: Doomsday suggested that the couple started a family sometime in the past. Meanwhile, alleged plot leaks claim that they eventually relocated to an alternate universe.

Speaking with IGN about the teaser, Atwell remained coy about what the teaser footage actually revealed.

“Whether that is reality or a dream or fantasy or a warning, who knows? But the image of that, the symbolism of that, shows the beating heart of this story is human relationships. The stakes could not be higher when the family is threatened or the family is in danger. …But it’s essentially about people loving each other.”

The upcoming film features a massive cast led by Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Other returning stars include Evans, Anthony Mackie, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, and Rebecca Romijn.

Human Relationships Remain the Priority

Being part of an enormous ensemble in a superhero spectacle does not appear to concern Atwell. Her focus remains on what she considers the most important element of the story.

“You can’t replace human connection,” she told Variety. “If, at the core, it’s characters that we’re fully invested in and care about, then we’ll go on that ride.”

Audiences will decide for themselves whether they remain invested in those characters when Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
