The Muppets are taking over Rock’n Roller Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. But if you were expecting the new Aerosmith-removing reskin to be something worth looking forward to, think again. Imagineers have screwed up another big assignment.

Rock’n Roller Coaster opened in 1999. I was there. It was a super fun attraction and the audio in the surround sound for each seat would soon be reduced in volume because during testing they had it cranked up to crazy levels of loud. But it’s been a long time and Aerosmith is fading out.

Their music will live forever, but the pre-show and having the band welcome you to the ride was getting harder and harder to keep up unless it’s supposed to be a period piece like going to a Beatles concert. We had heard rumors that Disney might make the attraction a Queen themed ride after Aerosmith, but following the outcry over the closure of Muppetvision 3D, Disney decided to kick the muppets over for a cheap reskin of Rock’n. So how’s that going?

I want to be clear here. I’m not negative about this for the sake of being negative. I have applauded the floats for Disney’s Starlight Parade, I think Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is a fantastic coaster. But lately, the vast majority of Disney World projects have been lackluster, poorly conceived and often broken at release.

There’s little thought to sightlines and theming has become a thing of yesteryear. There’s a way they could have put the Muppets into Rock’n Roller Coaster, even if it’s an odd fit, but this ain’t it.

Here’s the problem…

What they’re going to do is not a Muppets overlay. It’s an Electric Mayhem overlay with a few cameos featuring Kermit and the gang. This is akin to opening a Rock’n Roller Coaster starring Conan O’Brien and then make it 90% about his Tonight Show band. That would be strange. Furthermore, what is it exactly that makes Rock’n Roller Coaster a fun attraction?

Let’s list it out:

  1. Anticipation for 0-60 launch.
  2. The launch.
  3. The music as you ride an indoor coaster.
  4. Blacklights create atmosphere for the coaster.
  5. Loops

That’s the deal. But one of the biggest things that makes the coaster is the music. Replacing Aerosmith tunes with Dr. Teeth and other voice actors singing hand-me-down rock songs is in no way the same experience. I don’t want to hear the Dr. Teeth actor singing Living on a Prayer or Another One Bites the Dust. It’s just not as good as listening to the real thing. And ultimately, it all comes down to cost. Playing the real thing likely costs more than paying for a cover by some voice actors.

The other problem is that many of the Muppet actors no longer sound like the Muppets. That’s not on the actors, honestly, but it’s on massive budget cuts. The guys who do the Muppets are so few that they’re forced into roles they can’t perform. Matt Vogel is a great puppeteer and voice actor, but he doesn’t sound like Kermit in any way. But that is who plays Kermit these days. And that means this is going to be Rock’n Roller Coaster Starring the Moopets.

So count me out of being excited about this one. I guess you could say, another one bites the dust.
