James Gunn is once again stirring the pot. Just hours after confirming the upcoming Man of Tomorrow movie isn’t a straightforward Superman 2, the DC Studios co-head took to social media to describe Peacemaker Season 2 as the “Man of Tomorrow prequel.”

That single statement may have just redefined what fans can expect from his new DC Universe — and not in a way that parents will be happy about.

A Family-Friendly Superman… Tied to a TV-MA Show?

Peacemaker, starring John Cena, is one of Gunn’s trademark projects: raunchy, violent, and filled with sexual content. The HBO Max series carries a TV-MA rating, complete with full-frontal nudity, graphic violence, and crude humor. In other words, it’s about as far as you can get from the traditional family-friendly Superman brand.

By calling Peacemaker Season 2 the prequel to Man of Tomorrow, Gunn is signaling that audiences will need to watch this adults-only show in order to fully understand the setup for the next Superman film. That means kids who enjoyed seeing Superman on the big screen this summer are suddenly locked out of crucial story context because it’s buried in an explicit streaming series.

James Gunn’s Exact Words

On social media, Gunn promoted the series by writing: “Watch the Man of Tomorrow Prequel AKA #Peacemaker Season 2, airing a new episode tonight on @HBOMax at 9 pm EST/6 pm PST.”

That statement confirms Peacemaker isn’t just running alongside the movies in some self-contained story — it’s being treated as canonically essential to the Superman saga.

Why This Is a Problem for DC

DC has long marketed Superman as an all-ages character — the most recognizable superhero in the world, embraced by generations of children. Gunn’s approach now risks alienating families by forcing R-rated, TV-MA material into the same continuity as his flagship Superman films.

Instead of keeping Superman in a lane that parents can trust, Gunn has made Peacemaker a requirement for understanding Man of Tomorrow. That creates a jarring tonal disconnect: on one hand, you have Superman soaring as a hopeful symbol; on the other, you have Peacemaker, a series infamous for gore, vulgarity, and graphic content.

This isn’t just a branding mismatch — it’s a message that the DC Universe under Gunn isn’t designed for kids.

A Pattern Emerging

This isn’t the first time Gunn’s vision for DC has raised eyebrows. He’s repeatedly emphasized that the Superman sequel will be ensemble-driven, not a clean “Superman 2.” Now, tying that ensemble narrative directly into the raunchy world of Peacemaker only further highlights his preference for adult-oriented storytelling over family accessibility.

Warner Bros. Discovery may be betting that leaning into edgier, mature content will distinguish DC from Marvel. But the cost could be Superman’s status as the quintessential hero for everyone.

Gunn may think it’s clever marketing. Parents may see it as the final proof that Superman under DC’s new leadership is no longer for them or their kids.
