A GoFundMe was started to help support the wife and six children of James Van Der Beek after the actor passed away Wednesday. The original goal was $550,000. Less than 24 hours after launching, friends of the family had raised over $1 million. As donations continued pouring in, the target amount was raised to $1.5 million—which has already been surpassed by more than $500,000.

Van Der Beek may be best known for playing Dawson Leery on The WB teen drama Dawson’s Creek. His character memorably idolized director Steven Spielberg. While Van Der Beek and Spielberg never worked together, the director and his wife were among several industry professionals to donate to the GoFundMe.

Yet the comment section of the donation page is filled with memories from fans and those who knew Van Der Beek only through his work.

Defining Himself

Van Der Beek was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2023. In November 2024, he revealed he had “been privately dealing with this diagnosis.” Medical treatment was costly and put a severe financial burden on his family. The following year, the actor auctioned off memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and the film Varsity Blues to help cover the mounting expenses.

Last March, the actor shared a video on his birthday where he discussed how he had defined himself at various stages of his life. “When I was younger, I used to define myself as an actor, which was never really all that fulfilling. And then I became a husband, and that was much better. And then I became a father, and that was the ultimate,” he said.

“I could define myself then as a loving, capable, strong, supportive husband, father, provider, steward of the land that we’re so lucky to live on. And for a long time, that felt like a really good definition to the question, ‘Who am I? What am I?’ And then this year, I had to look my own mortality in the eye. I had to come nose to nose with death.”

Van Der Beek said that as the cancer stripped away all the things by which he had defined himself, he was left asking what he was. He said that after meditating on the question, he concluded: “I am worthy of God’s love, simply because I exist. And if I’m worthy of God’s love, shouldn’t I also be worthy of my own? And the same is true for you.”

The Generosity of Fans

The GoFundMe page for the Van Der Beek family explains that the actor’s wife Kimberly and their children “are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”

While nothing will make up for the loss of a husband and father, the generosity of so many may be a comfort to the Van Der Beek family in a time of uncertainty. It may also remind them that the man they loved was cared about and admired by many people around the world.
