Viewers looking to check out Nicolas Cage in Prime Video’s Spider-Noir will have options. The new trailer revealed that the live-action superhero series will be available in “Authentic Black & White” and “True-Hue Full Color.” Based on the comic series of the same name, Cage will reprise the role he voiced in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

According to a press release from Prime Video, Spider-Noir “tells the story of Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero.”
Trailer Breakdown
The trailer opens with Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li) asking Ben Reilly/Spider-Noir to tell her why—though exactly what remains unclear. But in classic noir style, Reilly replies that she already knows how it ends, so she suggests that he start at the beginning. He goes on to explain that he’s plagued by ticks, thoughts, and impulses that he tries to suppress. As he speaks, viewers are given a look into his Depression-era world.

Robbie Robertson (Lamorne Morris) asks Ben what is going on, before the trailer goes through a series of quick cuts of nightmarish images. Shortly after that, fans get to see Cage hamming it up a bit, as he explains that the reason he looks so rough is that he “beat up some guys in a bar” and “got plastered.”

More quick cuts follow, and the trailer finally reveals Spider-Noir in action—fighting and dancing. The trailer also flashes the series’ tagline: “With no power comes no responsibility.” As an inversion of the classic Spider-Man lesson, it suggests that Spider-Noir will be uninhibited by Peter Parker’s moral code. At the same time, some of the action shots are reminiscent of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films.

First Impressions
The hazy, glossy look of the trailer is heavy on atmosphere. It may remind some viewers of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, though more polished thanks modern technology. That said, Spider-Noir will clearly be Cage’s show. The actor has said in interviews that his performance is “70 percent Humphrey Bogart and 30 percent Bugs Bunny.”

Online reactions have been measured. Some users like the idea of being able to choose between color and black and white, and note that anything with Cage in the leading role is going to be interesting.
I think it looks good.
Good to have something different.
I can see we get tons of new movies
And we only have these actors for so long

Others have criticized what they see as an overly polished look and a forced sense of diversity.
My goodness that looks awful. Nic Cage looks like a 68 year old wax figure, and his co-stars are of course”*black guy, * asian lady, & *body-positive hispanic lady”.

Final Thoughts
In addition to Cage, Spider-Noir will feature performances from Karen Rodriguez, Jack Huston, Brendan Gleeson, and many others.

Prime Video subscribers will be able to decide for themselves on May 27 (MGM+ users will get it two days early) if Spider-Noir is a swing and a miss, or a home run. All eight 45-minute episodes will drop at once, so fans can binge the show over the Memorial Day weekend.
