Jason Momoa is coming back to DC. However, the former Justice League actor won’t be reprising his role as Aquaman. It has been confirmed that Momoa will portray the iconic antihero alien bounty hunter Lobo in the upcoming film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Deadline has officially confirmed Momoa’s casting, marking a significant addition to the expanding DC universe. It’s the first instance of a Snyderverse actor returning in Gunn’s new continuity playing a new character. Viola Davis and John Cena, for instance, are being integrated from Snyder’s canon into Gunn’s universe by reprising their roles as Amanda Waller and Peacemaker.

Momoa’s association with the Lobo character dates back even before James Gunn took the helm alongside Peter Safran to lead DC. The actor has consistently expressed his enthusiasm for the role, recently solidifying his commitment through a heartfelt Instagram post.
In his post, Momoa shared a screenshot of comments from a previous interview, highlighting his long-standing interest in bringing Lobo to life.

“I collect comics, and I don’t do so much anymore, but was always my favorite, and I always wanted to play Lobo, because I’m like, ‘Hello? It’s the perfect role,’” Momoa stated. He further emphasized his eagerness for the opportunity, adding that if DC approached him to play Lobo, it would be, “a f*** yeah.”
Complementing the screenshot, Momoa captioned his post with the succinct phrase, “They called.”
Lobo, an antihero known for his brutal and irreverent demeanor, originates from the planet Czarnia. The character boasts superhuman strength that can threaten Superman, regenerative capabilities, and invulnerability, making him a formidable presence in the DC universe.

Created by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, Lobo is often portrayed as a chaotic bounty hunter who revels in destruction and mayhem. He made his first appearance in Omega Men #3 in June 1983 and has since become a fan-favorite for his complex persona and relentless nature.
He even fought Marvel’s Wolverine one-on-one in the Marvel vs. DC miniseries.

Details about the plot of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow remain under wraps. However, the casting announcements have already generated significant buzz. House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock secured the title role of Supergirl after an extensive search, with Matthias Schoenaerts joining the cast as the villain Krem of the Yellow Hill.
Recently, Eve Ridley was revealed to portray Ruthye Mary Knolle, adding further intrigue to the series’ ensemble.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and penned by Ana Nogueira, the project is an adaptation of Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, illustrated by Bilquis Evely. DC executives James Gunn and Peter Safran are producing the series, with DC EVP Chantal Nong serving as executive producer. Production is slated to begin on January 13th. It will be the second theatrical movie released as part of Gunn’s new DC Universe following 2025’s Superman.

Deadline noted that Warner Bros and DC should optimistic about Momoa’s involvement, given his track record with the Aquaman franchise, which has collectively grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. However, the outlet failed to mention that only the first Aquaman film was a financial success, bringing in $1.1 billion.
The sequel, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom was a major flop for the studio, bringing in just $439 million on a reported budget of $219 million. When you factor in marketing expenses and theater cuts, the movie not only failed to make money, but didn’t even make a dent in the box office take of the original.

In addition to his role in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Momoa has several upcoming projects with Warner Bros.
These include A Minecraft Movie, set to release on April 4th, and the live-action/animated Animal Friends from Legendary. Moreover, Momoa will appear in Fast X: Part 2, the Apple miniseries Chief of War, and Amazon MGM’s The Wrecking Crew alongside Dave Bautista, among other exciting ventures.

Reusing actors for reboots isn’t an issue. Chris Evans used to be Johnny Storm.
Agreed. We’re not saying that it’s bad. Just it’s news and we’re reporting it.
I think it can be an issue, but if the original wasn’t really liked much, nobody really cares.
And I definitely don’t care about this choice. I’m not at all protective of Momoa’s Aquaman.
They forgot to make sure there wasn’t an amber turd floating in the water. Clean your fish tank!
Why can’t we get Unknown Actors to play Roles? This goes for ALL Films.
Look at the Harry Potter Kids, that was their first Role and made them Famous. We need that if we are going to fix Hollywood.
Not reusing the same people like it’s Nobit and Madea!!!!!
My patience with this guy has just about run out. He’s The Rock all over again.
