A bombshell from Deadline reveals that John Lithgow is in final negotiations to portray Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. Lithgow, a six-time Emmy winner known for his roles in The Crown and Dexter, would become the first American actor to play a major role in the Harry Potter series. This is a huge departure from J.K. Rowling’s long-standing preference for an all-British cast.

The Harry Potter film series notably featured only one American actor: Eleanor Columbus, daughter of director Chris Columbus, who played Susan Bones in Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets. Despite her on-screen appearance, she was given no speaking lines to maintain the franchise’s British authenticity. Lithgow’s potential casting, therefore, marks a major break from precedent and has sparked passionate debate among fans.
Americans were cast in the Wizarding World Fantastic Beasts movies as the first film primarily takes place in the United States. But while those take place within the same canonical film universe, they’re not considered part of the Harry Potter series.
The series, helmed by showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, promises a decade-long, faithful adaptation of Rowling’s novels. Filming will take place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the original films’ iconic location, with a projected debut on HBO in late 2026 or early 2027.
HBO, while declining to confirm casting specifics, assured that they are committed to a “faithful adaptation” while acknowledging the swirl of speculation accompanying pre-production.

Lithgow’s credentials, which include an Emmy for his portrayal of Winston Churchill on The Crown, have earned him praise for his acting prowess, but his American nationality has polarized Potter purists. Some argue, however, that his talent and experience with British roles make him a fitting choice, while others see the casting as a disruption of the series’ distinctly British character.
Lithgow is also 79 years old, which means that he’ll be in his 90s should he live to see the end of the series. The original Harry Potter films were forced to recast Dumbledore after the first two movies, when Richard Harris died in 2002. He was replaced by Michael Gambon who brought a much different quirkier interpretation to the character than Harris’s gentle quiet strength.

Further fueling controversy, rumors are circulating that the show may race swap Severus Snape, with British actor Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, The Lazarus Project) reportedly under consideration. This potential move has triggered heated discussions on social media, with many insisting on adherence to the source material.
The rumor mill is in full swing with other speculated castings: Sharon Horgan or Lesley Manville for Professor McGonagall, Brett Goldstein for Hagrid, and Cillian Murphy for Voldemort—a suggestion that even original actor Ralph Fiennes has endorsed. Meanwhile, the search for the series’ leading trio—Harry, Hermione, and Ron—has drawn over 32,000 audition tapes from hopeful young actors.

Fans are divided, with some embracing the fresh interpretations and others fearing a departure from the books’ essence. HBO’s statement pledging a “faithful adaptation” has done little to quell the debates, leaving many to wonder how far the series will stray from Rowling’s original vision. With John Lithgow possibly at the helm as Dumbledore and whispers of bold casting choices, it’s clear that HBO’s Harry Potter reboot is poised to make headlines, ignite controversy, and captivate audiences for years to come.

There are very few actors who are so phenomenally talented that they can make woke garbage entertaining. The question is not who the actors are but how much trash they’re going to insert to make Rowling sorry she ever sold the rights.
I don’t consider myself a Potter fan, or someone that particularly likes the rainbow people, but Stephen Fry seems like the perfect fit. He narrated the audiobooks and is an old fruit like the character, so why not?
