For decades, one of the most unusual stories in Disney history has involved a simple handwritten note left behind by Walt Disney shortly before his death. The note contained a name: Kurt Russell.
Now, the actor is once again reflecting on the mystery.
The Mystery of Walt Disney’s Final Note
During a recent interview with Deadline, Russell was asked about the longstanding story that his name was among the final words Walt Disney wrote before passing away in December 1966. According to Russell, he still has no idea why Disney wrote it down.

“I got a call from them from the studio and they wanted me to come… see his office,” Russell said.
In earlier interviews, the actor has said the visit took place several years after Disney’s passing. Speaking to Deadline, he recalled that after about ten minutes of looking around, he was asked to come over and see the note.
According to Russell, Disney employees wanted to know if he understood the significance of what had been written. Unfortunately, he was just as puzzled as everyone else.
Asked whether he knew what it pertained to, Russell replied, “Gee, I don’t. I have no idea.”
The note has fascinated Disney historians for decades because so little is known about its context. While many versions of the story have circulated over the years, no definitive explanation has ever emerged. As a result, fans have continued to speculate about why Disney wrote Russell’s name down and what he may have intended by it.
Walt Disney Saw Something Special in Kurt Russell
Russell reflected that Disney had always been very kind to him.
“I got to know him quite well and he was wonderful to me, and he really was mentoring this teenager without me knowing it,” Russell said.

At the time, Russell hoped to pursue a career in professional baseball. Taking an apparent interest in the young actor, Walt encouraged him to think about what he would do if that dream didn’t work out.
In his final filmed appearance, Disney introduced the cast of Follow Me, Boys! “You’re about to meet a 15-year-old boy for whom I predict a great acting future. His name is Kurt Russell,” Disney said.
Notably, it was Russell’s first appearance in a Disney film.
Russell told Deadline that he had only seen the introduction from The Wonderful World of Disney within the last ten years.

However, Walt Disney’s prediction proved remarkably accurate. Russell would go on to sign a long-term contract with Disney and eventually become one of the studio’s biggest stars of the 1970s. Films like The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Barefoot Executive, and The Strongest Man in the World established Russell as a wholesome, all-American teen idol.
After aging out of family films, he reinvented himself as a leading man in projects ranging from action movies to westerns and dramas.
A Disney Mystery That Endures
While the true meaning behind the note may never be known, it remains one of the most enduring pieces of Disney lore. More than half a century later, even the person whose name was written down still cannot explain it.
For Disney fans, that lingering uncertainty may be exactly why the story continues to capture imaginations.
