The sales data was part of a massive amount of leaked information that included gameplay footage from the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game and more.
As shared to ResetEra, the sales data shows that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which was released back in 2020 sold a total 11.125 million copies with 36% of those sales being digital. The game’s net sales totaled $427 million.
That’s more than 50% less than Marvel’s Spider-Man, which released in 2018. According to the leak, the game sold 22.685 million units with 34% of the sales being digital. Net sales totaled $827 million.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise as Matt McGloin at Cosmic Book News previously reported that analytics firm Super Data Research, a Nielsen-owned company, noted that Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales only sold 663,000 digital units across PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The group had previously reported that Marvel’s Spider-Man sold 2.2 million digital units as of September 2018. That’s 70% more than Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Clearly there is a market for Spider-Man: Miles Morales given it was the top selling title for 2021 beating out The Last of Us 2 by 823,000 units.
However, as noted above, it still paled in comparison to the original Marvel’s Spider-Man that put the focus on Peter Parker.

This is just another piece of evidence that a significant portion of the comic book adjacent audience is not interested in knock-off and derivative characters and prefer the original characters.
There’s plenty of evidence at the box office with Marvel Studios introducing derivative and knock-off characters in their more recent films and television shows. Black Panther is a perfect example. The original film grossed $700 million domestically and another $636.4 million internationally for a global gross of $1.3 billion. It sold a total of 76,845,177 tickets domestically.
In contrast, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever only grossed $453.8 million domestically and $400.1 million internationally for a global gross of $853.9 million. The film only sold 41,623,111 tickets domestically.
The tickets sold between the two films decreased by nearly 46%. The global gross decreased by 34%.
