David Hekili Kenui Bell, an actor and beloved local figure in Hawaii, has passed away at the age of 46.
A Talent Gone Too Soon
Bell appeared in Disney’s new live-action Lilo & Stitch remake as a character affectionately known as “Big Hawaiian Dude” or “Shaved Ice Guy,” a comedic role featured in a few scenes involving a dropped shave ice. His other credits included appearances on Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I.

Bell’s sister, Jalene Kanani Bell, confirmed his passing in a Facebook post over the weekend, writing: “It is with a heavy heart I share that my sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome little brother David H. K. Bell will spend today in the company of our Heavenly Father.”
According to Variety, Bell passed away on June 12, 2025. The Hawaii Police Department stated that no foul play is suspected. An official cause of death has not been announced.
A Passion for Acting and Community
Bell grew up in Kaimuki and attended Kalani High School, later working at Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole as an assistant airport superintendent. There, visitors would often hear his voice greeting them over the airport PA system—a familiar and friendly presence for both tourists and locals.

In addition to his day job, Bell was passionate about acting, voice work, and the film industry. He was a Screen Actors Guild member and frequently celebrated his projects on social media. In the weeks leading up to his passing, he had shared photos from the Lilo & Stitch set and clips from his audition on Instagram. In May, he attended a private cast and crew screening of the film.
“It was so awesome to see so many of the true stars in my opinion, our local crew in Hawaii.” he wrote at the time. “They deserve just as much or more recognition!”

His sister remembered how much her brother loved performing.
“David loved being an actor, doing voiceovers, spending time with Brutus traveling as an ambassador for Kona Brew.” she said. “The film industry and entertainment was so exciting to him and I loved that he enjoyed the arts.”
His Local Pride and Cultural Impact
Beyond his roles on television and in film, Bell left a lasting impact in his community. He was known for his warmth, humor, and dedication to promoting Hawaiian culture. As his sister noted, “His ability to deliver lines with English understanding, Indigenous knowledge and Pidgin to da Max… made him a diamond in the rough.”
