Ironheart hasn’t even premiered on Disney+ yet, but questions are already swirling about the show’s future. According to star Dominique Thorne, Ironheart Season 2 has not been greenlit, and it remains unclear whether the series will continue at all.

In a recent exclusive interview with The Direct, Thorne was asked if there had been any official discussions about a second season. Her reply was simply, “No, no. Not yet.”

Thorne went on to say that she’d like to see her character, Riri Williams, explore “the full range of other options presented to her in Season 1,” but avoided specifics to prevent spoilers. She added that the show broadens Riri’s perspective, opening the door to “unexpected” choices and teasing possible future directions for the character within the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Three Years on the Shelf for What?

Interestingly, Ironheart finished principal photography nearly three years ago, back in late 2022. The project has since been delayed multiple times, with its long stint on the shelf raising eyebrows across the industry. While Marvel Studios has cited extended visual effects work as one reason for the delay, others view the three-year gap as a potential sign of larger issues, especially amid Disney’s shifting strategy for its streaming content.

The show is finally set to debut on Disney+ this June, with a three-episode premiere on June 24, 2025. It arrives as the final entry in the MCU’s Phase Five, positioning Riri Williams as one of the franchise’s potential new leads. With The Fantastic Four: First Steps slated to launch Phase Six this July, the placement of Ironheart marks an unusual bridge between Marvel’s current and upcoming story arcs.

Ironheart trailer dislikes

Marketing for Ironheart has faced an uphill climb from the start. The show’s trailers have been met with widespread backlash across social media. The first trailer surpassed half a million dislikes on YouTube, while the most recent teaser also triggered another round of negative audience reaction.

Backlash Grows Ahead of Premiere

Criticism has extended well beyond the trailers. Audience concerns have centered on Ironheart’s storyline, which includes a prominent focus on wealth redistribution, as well as the casting of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars winner Shea Coulee in a central role. There is a noticeable divide among Marvel fans regarding these creative choices, with many still questioning whether the series will resonate with a broader audience.

Adding to the uncertainty, Disney is now in the process of scaling back its Marvel streaming content. Following recent reports of declining viewership and rising superhero fatigue, the company is said to be re-evaluating its slate and cutting back on shows that may not drive strong subscriber growth. Last year, Echo was quietly released as a binge drop with little promotion, an approach many saw as a test run for how Disney might handle less certain MCU properties going forward.

Thorne has hinted that Riri could return in future MCU films, such as Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars. But for now, with no official plans for Ironheart Season 2, the future of the series remains very much up in the air. Unless the show manages to overcome early backlash and find a strong audience, a second season may prove an increasingly difficult prospect.

It’s hilarious that they couldn’t get Armor Wars off the ground despite announcing it years ago, but they went full steam ahead on this. Typical Marvel.

It’s kind of perverse but modern entertainment, to me, is YouTubers slagging of woke shows that I hate.
