It’s now official—John Lithgow will step into the role of Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series. Lithgow, a six-time Emmy winner, confirmed the casting during an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, making him the first actor officially attached to the project. But his confirmation isn’t just another casting announcement—it’s a game-changer. Lithgow will be the first American to play a major role in the Harry Potter universe, breaking J.K. Rowling’s long-standing rule that only British or Irish actors could be cast in the franchise.

The Harry Potter TV series, set to air on HBO and stream on Max, promises a decade-long, faithful adaptation of Rowling’s beloved novels. With Francesca Gardiner serving as showrunner and Mark Mylod directing, the series aims to dive deeper into the books than the films ever did. Filming is expected to begin in summer 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K., with a release window targeted for late 2026 or early 2027.

During his interview, Lithgow revealed that the offer to play Dumbledore came as a surprise while he was at the Sundance Film Festival. The 79-year-old actor admitted the decision wasn’t easy, given the enormous time commitment.

“Well, it came as a total surprise to me,” Lithgow said. “I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes.”

Breaking the British Casting Tradition

Lithgow’s casting is significant not just for who he is, but for what it represents. Since the original Harry Potter films, J.K. Rowling has insisted on an all-UK cast to maintain the cultural authenticity of the series. The movies famously followed this rule to the letter, with only one minor exception—Eleanor Columbus, the American daughter of director Chris Columbus, who played Susan Bones in Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets. Even then, Columbus was given no speaking lines and appeared solely in a background role.

Now, Lithgow becomes the first American actor to portray a major character in the Harry Potter universe, and it’s no small role. Dumbledore is one of the most iconic figures in the series, previously portrayed by the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon, both esteemed British actors. Lithgow’s casting breaks the cardinal rule and signals that HBO’s reboot may not be as bound to tradition as fans once thought.

What Lithgow as Dumbledore Means for the Series

With Lithgow now officially on board as Dumbledore, the secrecy surrounding the reboot’s casting process is starting to unravel. His announcement could open the door for more unconventional casting choices, a move that could either excite or alienate portions of the fanbase.

Several casting rumors have already been circulating. Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You) is reportedly being eyed for Severus Snape, a choice that has sparked discussions about reimagining iconic characters. Cillian Murphy, initially rumored for Voldemort, is now said to be in talks to play Professor Quirinus Quirrell instead.

Other rumored castings include Sharon Horgan or Lesley Manville for Professor McGonagall and Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein as Hagrid. The search for the main trio—Harry, Hermione, and Ron—is still ongoing, with over 32,000 audition tapes submitted from aspiring young actors.

Lithgow’s casting is a bold move that signals a shift in how the Harry Potter universe might evolve under HBO’s stewardship. As more casting news trickles out, fans can expect plenty of surprises—and heated debates—leading up to the show’s eventual premiere.

People wanted a redo for Percy Jackson. Look how awful that was when Rick Riordan was actually involved. The movies that were made twenty years ago are the best you’re going to get.

I like John Lithgow, but this isn’t a good casting choice. I know a lot of the more right leaning people think that Zaslav is some sort of anti-woke guy and will save WB, but I have yet to see any evidence of such, and in fact I’m betting he’ll be out within the next two years from repeated mistakes. This new Harry Potter won’t please any of the HP fans of any stripe, and won’t bring in any new people to watch either. It’s a bad move plain and simple.

Mad Lemming

Zaslav is in over his head. The Board appointed him because he’s a bean counter they thought would be able to help them get back to profitability. They weren’t willing to make the sacrifices he suggested until it became obvious he was right and now *at best* he might get WBD back to simply breaking even and only if they finally give in and let him liquidate $30 billion in assets.

Yes, I checked the numbers and WBD is in debt $30 billion.

TTTRRRUUUTTTHHH

Weren’t they in debt $50 billion at one point? What sorts of magical bookkeeping did he pull to get rid of $20 billion in debt so fast? It isn’t like WBD has had any major hits that would’ve put serious dents in that sort of debt.

once were wombles

I like Lithgow in other stuff but not sure who you might want. I can see them gender swapping or race swapping some original cast even sticking a few trans in there just to piss off JK.

TTTRRRUUUTTTHHH

I know he isn’t considered a “serious” actor, but it should’ve been Stephen Fry. He’s English, he’s the correct age, he’s gay like the character, and he narrated the audiobooks of HP. You aren’t finding a better choice.

harry nuckels

No disrespect to Lithgow, but this cash grab hasn’t even aired yet and the British authenticity is out the window with this casting…

James Eadon

Just star good-looking, Anglo Saxon Englishmen and actresses. Why put this American fella in it? He’s already too old.
