While much of the theme park world has been focused on the highly anticipated opening of Universal Epic Universe in Orlando on May 22, 2025, Universal has been quietly working on another massive project across the pond. Universal Studios Great Britain is now on the brink of receiving its final go-ahead, bringing an exciting new destination to the UK.
In 2023, Universal confirmed the acquisition of roughly 480 acres of land south of Bedford, located about 60 miles from London. While Universal has kept specific details about the park’s attractions under wraps, according to The New York Times, the success of Wicked at the box office, paired with the upcoming release of Wicked: For Good in November 2025 hints that Oz could play a prominent role in the new park’s lineup.

Universal Destinations & Experiences CEO Mark Woodbury echoed this sentiment, stating, “When I saw Wicked, my first reaction was, ‘This is a theme park waiting to happen.’”
Much like Disney’s process for DisneylandForward, Universal worked closely with local government bodies and nearby communities to ensure all concerns were addressed. Leaders from six local authorities have expressed strong support for the project, even sending a letter to the Prime Minister highlighting the substantial benefits. Among these benefits are the creation of 20,000 jobs during construction and another 20,000 positions for the resort’s operation.
The only remaining hurdle is final approval from the Treasury, which needs to sign off on the financial proposals. The ambitious plans include a four-zone park, a 500-room hotel, a new train station, two transport hubs, and a CityWalk-style dining and shopping district accessible without a park ticket.
Parliament Member Chris Curtis called the project a “once-in-a-generation opportunity for the UK,” emphasizing his ongoing commitment to seeing it come to fruition.

Once the green light is given, Universal Great Britain is expected to take around six years to complete. For comparison, Universal Epic Universe—also sprawling across 480 acres—was announced in 2019 and is set to open in 2025, despite construction delays.
One of the most intriguing aspects of Universal Great Britain’s location is its proximity to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, just 40 miles away. Given the global popularity of the Wizarding World lands at Universal’s existing parks, it seems highly likely that some form of Harry Potter-themed attraction will be part of the UK park.

Whether Universal opts to recreate beloved areas like Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, or introduce new experiences such as the upcoming Ministry of Magic expansion at Epic Universe, the possibilities are endless.
If approved, Universal Studios Great Britain will represent a monumental addition to the UK’s entertainment and tourism landscape. With its combination of immersive attractions, expansive resort amenities, and strong community support, the park is poised to become a must-visit destination for locals and international travelers alike.
