A fake quote attributed to Superman actress Rachel Brosnahan is making the rounds online—and it’s spreading fast enough to warrant some serious fact-checking. The viral claim suggests that Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming DC reboot, said Superman is “not for everyone” and would anger “the same old people who don’t support ideas of progress and empowerment.”

The full version of the fabricated quote reads:
“It’s not for everyone…Superman will surely anger the same old people who don’t support ideas of progress and empowerment. James Gunn warned us from the beginning that we wouldn’t have the support of half the audience, but that’s not the better half. This isn’t for men or women with ‘60s-style ideas.’”
Here’s the problem: that quote is completely fake.
No interview, no press event, and no official source confirms it. It’s not in Vanity Fair, Entertainment Weekly, Good Housekeeping, or anywhere else Brosnahan has done press, nor does it appear on any social media accounts attributed to her. It’s a fabrication—one seemingly designed to spark outrage and division among fans and poison conservative sentiment against the upcoming film.

Worse still, the quote isn’t just made up—it contradicts what Brosnahan actually said in a verified interview with Good Housekeeping.
In that feature, published April 12, 2025, Brosnahan described the tone of the movie in far more optimistic terms.
“There’s something in it for everyone,” she said before calling it, “the hopeful Superman.” She even stressed that “it’s hopeful without being overly earnest and saccharine.”
“I’m excited to be putting something hopeful out into the world in the middle of these pretty tricky and tumultuous times,” she added. “It’s hopeful, but it’s also entertaining. It has all the things you expect and want from a big superhero movie and then also a lot of heart too.”
That doesn’t sound like someone trying to alienate audiences. It sounds like exactly what Superman should be.
James Gunn’s Superman, formerly titled Superman: Legacy, is set to debut in July 2025 and marks the first film in the new DC Studios continuity. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent alongside Brosnahan’s Lois Lane, with supporting appearances from characters like Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Metamorpho, and Mister Terrific. Gunn has stated the movie will focus on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human values—an aspirational and optimistic take meant to recapture the heart of the character.

In a landscape full of reboots, multiverses, and grim antiheroes, Superman is being positioned as a course correction—a movie that brings the Man of Steel back to basics: truth, justice, and hope. But there are still many fears surrounding James Gunn’s direction for this film.
Gunn previously confirmed changes to the established Superman mythos, like the Kent farm house being a converted double-wide trailer. There have also been rumored plot leaks about Luthor using an army of mutant monkeys to hurt Superman’s feelings with mean social media posts. There has also been some very questionable CGI on display in the film’s trailers.

Simply put, if you’re nervous about this movie, there are many good reasons. But this fake quote about Superman being “not for everyone” shouldn’t be one of them.
That makes the fake quote even more glaring. Whoever made it up clearly wanted to push a narrative. But the facts—and the real words from Brosnahan—tell a very different story.

If you’re seeing that quote online, do yourself a favor: ignore it. The actress didn’t say it, and this movie, according to her, wasn’t made to divide people. It was made to inspire them. Whether it actually does is another matter entirely.
