Lucasfilm announced a film titled The Mandalorian & Grogu that will be directed by Jon Favreau will go into production sometime later this year.

Favreau told Lucasfilm in a press release, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.
Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.

On top of the announcement that Favreau would direct this upcoming film, Lucasfilm confirmed that the three films they announced at Star Wars Celebration last year are still in development. Those films are being helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Dave Filoni, and James Mangold.
Finally, they confirmed that Filoni is also working on Ahsoka Season 2.

This announcement comes in the wake of a rumor less than a month ago that claimed Lucasfilm would adapt the fourth season of The Mandalorian into a feature film.
Scooper Jeff Sneider claimed during an appearance on The Hot Mic podcast, ““A couple of months ago, I also shot this one down, there were rumors that season 4 of The Mandalorian could be turned into a movie. At the time I don’t think that was necessarily the case. However, that is what I am starting to hear. That the odds are in that project’s favor. Whatever the season 4 of The Mandalorian turns out to be, whoever is in it, whatever shape it takes, it is looking like that could be the next Star Wars movie and that may be the thing that’s announced before the end of the year.”
Sneider added, “I think that Star Wars is anxious to make an announcement. I don’t know that it will necessarily be before the end of the year especially because the town starts to shut down basically next week, but I think that those Mandalorian Season 4 movie rumors, I think there was something to those.”
“That’s not confirmed,” he hedged. “That is just a rumor at this point. It remains a rumor, but when I start hearing it from my person then it’s like, ‘Oh! Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.’”

Favreau had also confirmed that he had written the fourth season of The Mandalorian already. He said, “Season 4, yeah, I’ve written it already. We have to know where we are going to tell a fully formed story. So, we had mapped it out, Dave and I. And then slowly you write just each episode. So I was writing it during post-production because all of it has to feel like a continuation and one full story.”

Greenlighting a film based on The Mandalorian that appears to be the fourth season of the Disney+ show is a huge gamble especially given the show’s ratings declined throughout the entire third season as The Mandalorian was supplanted by Bo-Katan Kryze.
The third season has an abysmal 51% Audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Not only did the show receive poor audience scores, but its viewership declined despite an increase in subscribers to Disney+.
Nielsen reported that viewership for the Season 3 premiere clocked in at only 823 million minutes. The Mandalorian Season 2 premiere viewership numbers clocked in at 1.030 billion minutes.

What do you make of this announcement from Lucasfilm?

I’m about as excited for this as I am to watch a bowl of oatmeal grow cold.
At least you can warm it up again.
