Despite low ratings, Marvel appears determined to keep Daredevil alive, even if that means bringing a character from the Netflix era back from the dead.

Leaked set photos reveal that Elodie Yung will appear in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3. The images circulating online show Yung filming scenes in costume, wielding Elektra’s signature sai weapons while sporting an updated version of the character’s iconic black-and-red outfit. While Disney has yet to officially confirm her casting, the images leave little doubt that Matt Murdock’s longtime love interest is making a return.

Elektra Returns Once Again

Yung originally portrayed Elektra during the second season of Netflix’s Daredevil before returning in The Defenders. Fans may recall that the character already died once and was subsequently resurrected by The Hand. However, Elektra’s story ultimately ended on an ambiguous note, leaving room for years of speculation about a potential comeback.

Marvel Studios appears to be doubling down on nostalgia, as Yung’s return marks yet another major character revival from Marvel Television’s original Daredevil and Defenders saga.

In addition to Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones appeared in the most recent season. Finn Jones is also expected to reprise his role as Iron Fist in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3.

While a Defenders reunion may once have excited fans, some critics suggest that Marvel’s strategy increasingly resembles a desperate attempt to attract an audience. Elektra can come back from the dead, but can Daredevil: Born Again?

Ratings Continue to Struggle

After two polarizing seasons, many viewers appear to have checked out. Daredevil: Born Again repeatedly failed to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming charts. The show currently holds a 38% “Bogus” score on Criticless, lower than the 2003 Ben Affleck Daredevil film.

The disappointing viewership numbers stand in stark contrast to Marvel’s apparent commitment to the property. Rather than scaling back its ambitions, the studio has instead expanded the show’s scope by reuniting more characters from the Netflix era.

The series has also leaned heavily into contemporary political themes. Any resulting controversy has only been amplified by comments from members of the cast and crew. While the original Netflix series focused primarily on timeless questions of morality, justice, and faith, Daredevil: Born Again appears to have adopted a different approach.

“It’s incredible to be a part of that kind of project that’s reflecting what’s happening in the world right now,” Matthew Lillard, who played a new character introduced in the second season, said in one interview.

Can Nostalgia Save the Franchise?

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 will reportedly jump forward in time at roughly the same pace as the real world. That could give the series an opportunity to distance itself from some of its more divisive political storylines. Additionally, bringing back fan-favorite characters from the franchise’s past may encourage a less grounded—if still dark and gritty—creative direction.

Whether bringing back Elektra will reverse the declining viewership for Daredevil: Born Again remains to be seen. What appears increasingly clear, however, is that Marvel’s new strategy for the show is not to reinvent the franchise, but to reconstruct as much of the original Netflix version as possible—one familiar face at a time.
