The Michael box office run keeps moonwalking past expectations.

After briefly giving up the top spot last weekend, Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic Michael stormed back to No. 1 at the domestic box office with another $26.1 million haul, proving once again that audiences are still showing up in force for the controversial but undeniably successful film.

According to weekend estimates, the film reclaimed the crown thanks in large part to regaining premium large format screens, helping push the worldwide total to a staggering $703.9 million after just four weekends in theaters. That places the film within striking distance of overtaking Bohemian Rhapsody as one of the biggest music biopics ever released worldwide (It has already beaten Bohemian Rhapsody domestically).

‘Michael’ Box Office Numbers Continue To Impress

The return to first place is another major win for Lionsgate, especially given the intense competition currently crowding theaters.

While many recent Hollywood releases have struggled with steep second-weekend drops and weak audience retention, Michael has displayed unusual staying power. The film’s fourth-weekend performance suggests strong word of mouth continues to drive ticket sales even after the initial rush of curiosity surrounding the movie’s release.

Industry tracking cited the return of premium screens as a major factor in the rebound. With IMAX and other PLF auditoriums back in play, Michael gained a noticeable boost over competitors.

The film’s domestic top-five competition this weekend looked like this:

  • Michael — $26.1 million
  • The Devil Wears Prada 2 — $18 million
  • Obsession — $16 million
  • Mortal Kombat II — $13.4 million
  • The Sheep Detectives — $9.3 million

That result is particularly notable because Michael is now in its fourth frame while several newer releases are already showing signs of audience erosion.

Lionsgate May Have Found Its Biggest Modern Hit

For Lionsgate, Michael has become more than just a successful release. It’s rapidly turning into one of the studio’s defining theatrical victories of the modern era.

The film has now climbed to over $703 million worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-grossing release in Lionsgate history. That’s an extraordinary result for a studio that has struggled in recent years to produce consistent blockbuster-level theatrical hits outside established franchises like John Wick and The Hunger Games.

The performance also reinforces the continuing audience appetite for legacy music acts and nostalgia-driven event films — especially when treated like major theatrical spectacles rather than disposable streaming content.

Controversy Clearly Didn’t Hurt ‘Michael’

Leading up to release, Michael faced intense scrutiny online over how the film would handle the late singer’s complicated legacy. Debate surrounding Michael Jackson has remained heated for years, especially following documentaries and renewed allegations against the pop icon.

Yet despite constant online discourse, the box office results suggest mainstream moviegoers either separated the art from the controversy or were simply interested enough in Jackson’s life and music to show up anyway.

Jaafar Jackson’s performance as his uncle has also generated significant attention, with many viewers praising both the physical resemblance and stage recreations shown throughout the film.

At this point, the movie’s commercial success is no longer debatable. The only remaining question is just how high Michael can climb before its theatrical run comes to an end.

Can ‘Michael’ Hold Against Incoming Competition?

The next major box office challenge for Michael arrives immediately.

Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing to launch The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is expected to dominate next weekend’s charts despite mixed early reactions and questions surrounding franchise fatigue in the Star Wars brand.

Even so, Michael has already proven remarkably resilient. If audience momentum continues, the film could remain a major factor at the box office well into the summer.

And if the current pace holds, Lionsgate may soon be celebrating one of the biggest biopic successes Hollywood has ever seen.
