Netflix has announced another major round of layoffs, eliminating approximately 1,000 positions as the streaming giant faces slowing audience growth, increasing competition, and mounting pressure to improve its financial performance.

The reductions, announced Wednesday, October 14, represent approximately 6% of Netflix’s global workforce and constitute the company’s largest round of job cuts since 2022.

According to Reuters, the layoffs primarily affect employees working in product development, technology, legal affairs, and human resources. Netflix employed approximately 16,000 full-time workers at the end of 2025.

The announcement adds Netflix to a growing list of major entertainment companies reducing their workforces in 2026, raising questions about the sustainability of Hollywood’s streaming business model.

Netflix Leadership Defends Workforce Reductions

Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters informed employees of the reductions through an internal memorandum Wednesday morning.

“Our mission—to entertain the world—is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources,” the executives explained.

Despite eliminating approximately 1,000 positions, Netflix leadership maintained that the company’s overall financial outlook remains positive.

“Our business is strong and growing, and we remain on track to deliver our full-year forecast,” the executives continued.

The company also indicated that it intends to continue investing in areas expected to produce stronger growth.

However, the announcement comes just six days before Netflix is scheduled to release its third-quarter earnings report on October 20.

The timing will inevitably place additional attention on the company’s financial performance, particularly as investors evaluate whether its spending and expansion strategies are producing sufficient returns.

Netflix previously eliminated approximately 450 positions during two rounds of layoffs in 2022, following a rare decline in its subscriber base.

Wednesday’s announcement is more than twice the size of those combined reductions.

Streaming Competition Creates New Challenges

Netflix remains one of the world’s dominant subscription streaming services, but the entertainment landscape has changed considerably since the company first established itself as Hollywood’s leading digital disruptor.

Traditional competitors such as Disney, Amazon, and Warner Bros. have invested heavily in their own streaming operations.

Meanwhile, free entertainment platforms are capturing an increasingly significant portion of consumers’ viewing time.

YouTube has emerged as a particularly formidable competitor.

According to Nielsen’s July 2026 television viewing measurements, YouTube represented approximately 14.2% of television viewing in the United States, compared with Netflix’s 7.8%.

That difference is significant because Netflix depends heavily on paid subscriptions and substantial investments in professionally produced entertainment. YouTube, by comparison, draws much of its programming from independent creators, allowing the platform to offer an enormous variety of content without relying on the same traditional Hollywood production model.

Netflix’s viewing hours increased approximately 2% during the first half of 2026 compared with the previous year, according to reporting from Business Insider.

Although that represents growth, it also suggests the company faces challenges maintaining the rapid increases in engagement that once characterized its expansion.

Netflix Expands Beyond Traditional Streaming

In response to the increasingly competitive marketplace, Netflix has pursued several initiatives designed to diversify its business.

The company has expanded into advertising-supported subscriptions, live entertainment, sporting events, video podcasts, and gaming. These initiatives represent an effort to make Netflix more than a destination for scripted movies and television series.

However, diversification also introduces additional expenses and operational challenges.

Netflix’s gaming ambitions, in particular, have experienced setbacks, including studio closures and changes to its development strategy. The company also lost its attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery’s studio and streaming businesses earlier this year.

Paramount Skydance ultimately prevailed in the bidding competition, completing its acquisition earlier this month. That transaction creates another major entertainment competitor with access to extensive film libraries, television programming, and established franchises.

Netflix must now continue developing its entertainment portfolio while competing against increasingly consolidated media companies.

Hollywood’s Employment Crisis Continues

The latest Netflix layoffs arrive during a difficult period for entertainment industry employees.

Disney recently implemented another round of workforce reductions affecting hundreds of workers, while NBCUniversal has also eliminated positions as companies reconsider their spending priorities.

These reductions demonstrate that workforce restructuring is affecting both traditional entertainment conglomerates and companies originally positioned as the future of Hollywood.

For years, streaming was presented as an engine of virtually unlimited growth. Studios spent billions developing original programming, acquiring subscribers, and competing for exclusive entertainment rights.

However, consumers have finite amounts of time and money available for entertainment.

As subscription prices increase and competing services multiply, streaming companies face growing pressure to demonstrate that their investments are producing measurable results.

The consequences extend beyond the executives making those decisions.

Employees working in technology, administration, production support, and other departments increasingly face uncertainty as companies attempt to reduce operating expenses.

It’s also important to distinguish Netflix’s latest reductions from layoffs directly affecting film and television production crews. Wednesday’s cuts are concentrated in corporate and technical departments rather than being announced as a reduction in creative production staffing.

Nevertheless, they contribute to the broader employment instability affecting the entertainment business.

Netflix’s financial results later this month should provide additional insight into whether its restructuring reflects temporary cost controls or a more substantial adjustment to slower long-term growth.

For now, the elimination of approximately 1,000 jobs offers another reminder that Hollywood’s transition to streaming has not produced the stable entertainment economy that industry leaders once envisioned.
