New Avengers: Doomsday Teaser Shows Tension Over “Cap” Title For Steve Rogers

Marvel’s latest Avengers: Doomsday teaser turns Steve Rogers’ return into an awkward exchange over who gets called “Cap.”

The preview features Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man addressing Chris Evans’ returning hero by his familiar nickname before correcting himself with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson present. Played for comedy, the moment highlights a complication surrounding Evans’ comeback: Marvel is bringing back its original Captain America while preserving his successor’s position.

The exchange follows months of speculation about whether Steve will reclaim his familiar costume or spend the crossover fighting in civilian clothing.

Ant-Man Calls Steve “Cap,” Then Corrects Himself

The preview debuted during Game 1 of the World Series on October 23, combining superhero footage with a baseball promotion featuring the Fantastic Four and MLB players.

One exchange brings the Captain America succession directly into the dialogue.

As Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards prepares to throw a ceremonial first pitch, Bryce Harper, Freddie Freeman, Jacob Misiorowski, Junior Caminero, and Randy Arozarena discuss his prospects. They suggest Thor could “really put the hammer down” before proposing Captain America as someone they would trust on the mound.

“Depends on which Cap you’re talking about,” Caminero observes.

The teaser then cuts to a scene from Avengers: Doomsday, where Scott Lang looks toward Steve and asks, “Right, Cap?”

With Sam present, Scott hastily corrects himself: “I mean… right, Steve?” He then awkwardly turns back to Sam and addresses him as Cap.

The joke draws on Steve’s established relationships with the Avengers. However, the correction also suggests that using the nickname audiences associated with him for years has become uncomfortable within the team.

The footage plays that discomfort for laughs rather than establishing a serious dispute between Steve and Sam. For fans already critical of Marvel’s handling of the mantle, however, the distinction may offer little reassurance.

Steve’s Civilian Look Fuels “Captain Shirtpants” Mockery

Questions about Steve’s identity in Doomsday were circulating well before this teaser.

In July, concept artwork shared by former Marvel Studios visual development director Andy Park depicted Steve wearing a black T-shirt and jeans rather than his Captain America uniform.

That appearance echoed an earlier claim from YouTuber Gary Buechler, known as Nerdrotic, that Steve would return without suiting up as Captain America. Sam, meanwhile, appeared in his superhero costume.

Although the artwork does not establish Steve’s wardrobe throughout the film, it fueled criticism of his apparent presentation. Some fans celebrated Evans’ return, while others mocked the prospect of a casually dressed Steve as “Captain Shirtpants.”

For viewers who still regard Steve Rogers as Captain America, the new teaser reinforces the impression that Marvel intends to distinguish his return from a restoration of the mantle. His familiar nickname becomes something Scott feels obliged to withdraw.

That leaves Marvel relying on the recognition Evans brings while asking audiences to accept a different presentation of the character.

Marvel Makes the Succession Part of the Joke

Marvel’s challenge is apparent in the exchange. Steve’s history makes Scott’s use of “Cap” feel natural, while Sam’s presence supplies the reason for his correction.

For viewers already skeptical of bringing Evans back without restoring his full Captain America identity, the joke underscores that awkward balancing act. Marvel wants the appeal of Steve’s return while emphasizing that the title now belongs to someone else.

A brief promotional exchange cannot establish how successfully the film handles that relationship. For now, however, Marvel has made the distinction part of its marketing: Steve Rogers is back among the Avengers, but even calling him “Cap” requires a correction.
