Westeros is officially heading to the big screen.
Warner Bros. has set its first Game of Thrones movie, Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest, for a theatrical release in summer 2029.
According to Variety, Owen Harris will direct the film from a screenplay by Beau Willimon. Harris already has experience in Westeros after directing episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Willimon, meanwhile, is a newcomer to George R.R. Martin’s world, but he has considerable experience with another major franchise. The House of Cards creator wrote the three-episode Narkina 5 prison arc during the first season of Disney’s Andor, culminating with the acclaimed prison-break episode “One Way Out.” He later returned to write three more episodes during the show’s second and final season.
That gives Warner Bros. a writer with experience adapting an established fictional universe while handling political intrigue, rebellion, and large-scale conflict—all elements that should feature prominently in Aegon’s conquest of Westeros.
The film is scheduled for a wide theatrical release on Friday, June 1, 2029, placing it squarely in the early summer movie season.
Aegon the Conqueror Finally Comes to the Screen
Warner Bros. has not revealed specific plot details, but the title leaves relatively little mystery about the story.
Aegon I Targaryen launched the conquest that ultimately established the Targaryen dynasty’s rule over most of Westeros centuries before the events of Game of Thrones.
He was joined by his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, with the three Targaryens riding the dragons Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. Their campaign reshaped Westeros and eventually led to the creation of the Iron Throne from the swords of Aegon’s defeated enemies.

The story also has an important connection to House of the Dragon.
That series revealed that Aegon conquered Westeros partly because of a prophetic dream warning of a devastating threat emerging from the North. Aegon believed the kingdoms needed to be united under Targaryen rule if humanity was to survive what viewers of Game of Thrones would eventually know as the White Walkers.
The upcoming movie will therefore have an opportunity to expand on a pivotal piece of Targaryen history that has repeatedly been referenced but never fully depicted onscreen.
Game of Thrones Makes the Jump to Theaters
An Aegon project has been discussed for years, although its form has changed considerably.
Writer Mattson Tomlin was previously developing a television treatment centered on Aegon’s conquest. However, Entertainment Weekly notes that the project is presumed to have been abandoned as Warner Bros. moves ahead with the feature film.

HBO confirmed in 2024 that a theatrical Game of Thrones project was in development, finally giving the franchise a chance to make the jump that original series showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss once hoped to make with the conclusion of their show.
In the meantime, Warner Bros. and HBO have no intention of leaving Westeros dormant.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is scheduled to return in 2027, while the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon is expected in 2028.
That makes Aegon’s Conquest the next major chapter in an increasingly packed Game of Thrones franchise. More importantly, it will test whether the world that became a television phenomenon can command the same audience on the big screen.
