The new Supergirl trailer is—as many expected—tonally distinct from the first look. It appears to address some early fan criticisms and hints at a more character-driven story. Whereas Milly Alcock’s Kara initially came across as a jaded, reluctant, almost self-destructive hero, this second trailer reveals a Supergirl with heart.

With rumors that the film—set to hit theaters this June—has undergone multiple test cuts, this trailer may reflect a very different movie than originally imagined. Online reactions so far have been mixed. As James Gunn’s DC Universe (DCU) continues to find its footing and strike the right tone with audiences, Supergirl is carrying a significant share of that expectation.
Kara’s Emotional Arc and Early Stakes
In what could be seen as a gentle corrective, the latest Supergirl trailer opens with Superman expressing concern for his young cousin. By contrast, the earlier trailer began with Krypto, Kara’s dog, relieving himself on a picture of Big Blue. Kara remains the broken, lonely, and often-drunk character audiences have already seen—but this time, her despair and her deep bond with Krypto are clearly grounded, giving her emotional arc more weight and clarity.

The trailer then begins playing “What Becomes of the Brokenhearted.” While needle-drops are a James Gunn signature, he isn’t directing this film. The stakes are immediately made clear. Krypto has been poisoned, and Kara has only three days to find an antidote. As she races across the universe to save her dog, she also takes on the responsibility of protecting a young girl, Ruthye, whose “innocent family” was murdered.

Two familiar plotlines and a well-worn character arc might have some fans rolling their eyes. A reaction video posted on the Nerdrotic Daily YouTube account is titled “One Trope after Another.” What Supergirl may lack in originality will likely need to be compensated by spectacle—and that’s exactly where the trailer tries to deliver.

Much of the remainder of the trailer alternates between intense action and touches of humor. The standout moment is the reveal of Jason Momoa as fan-favorite Lobo. “Stop,” he says, downing a shot of booze. “You’re hurting my head.”

The new characters and tone are sparking discussion online.
Divided Opinions on Krypto and the DCU Tone
While some users on social media remain cautious, the new Supergirl trailer does seem to have inspired some optimism.
Saw the new trailer for Supergirl. Color me intrigued. That said, the over-emphasis on Krypto in Gunn’s DC feels weird. Still, I’ll be willing to give this a shot.

However, the increased emphasis on Krypto in the story isn’t landing with everyone.
This entire film is gonna be about that damn dog…isnt it…https://t.co/A25pOyo34g

Many reactions to this latest look at Supergirl have given fans the sense that the DCU is playing it safe with its film.
I honestly have no feelings about this.
It looks like the same “reluctant hero gets pushed into destiny, finds themself, and realizes they were special all along” premise we’ve already seen a hundred times. https://t.co/t82tyNVQ3F

Conclusion: Soaring or Stumbling?
Ultimately, fans won’t know if Supergirl soars or stumbles until the film hits theaters. The two trailers have offered markedly different perspectives on the story, tone, and character, giving audiences plenty to speculate about. Whether that sparks excitement, skepticism, or outright frustration will depend largely on individual expectations—but one thing is clear: the film is aiming to balance emotional depth, high-stakes action, and cosmic spectacle.
