Rachel Zegler’s next feature film, She Gets It From Me, is heading into production without a confirmed distributor and with what appears to be a modest independent budget. The project, which will co-star Marisa Tomei and is directed by Julia von Heinz, is structured as an independently financed character-driven dramedy rather than a traditional studio-backed production.

As of now, no major studio or streaming platform has acquired distribution rights for the film. Instead, international sales are being handled by Embankment Films, a UK-based company that specializes in raising financing through territory pre-sales and arranging global distribution deals. In North America, CAA is representing the project in an effort to secure a domestic distributor. That means the film is currently being shopped to buyers rather than entering production with a guaranteed release strategy already in place.

By the way, if you’ve never heard of Embankment Films, you’re not alone. They’re famous for such big hits as: Golda, The Miracle Club, Joika, and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of of Harold Fly. Now I’m not telling you those are bad films… I have no idea, I’ve never seen nor known of them. But if you’re expecting Rachel Zegler’s next big film to be… big… you might want to re-think that reality.

However, to be fair, this type of setup is common for lower-budget independent films. Rather than being financed entirely by a single studio’s production slate, the funding typically comes from a combination of foreign pre-sales, private equity, tax incentives tied to filming locations, and gap financing. Reports indicate the film is expected to shoot in New Jersey, which suggests it may also benefit from state production tax credits. However, no official production budget has been publicly disclosed. Still, with Rachel Zegler having been working in live musical performances for the last year, and with this independent comedy drama having been announced last year around the release of Snow White, it does seem peculiar that they still have no distribution deal whatsoever.

And to clarify, yes, that does mean Rachel Zegler’s next movie has no guarantee of theatrical release nor streaming release. For all we know, this might have a shot at Tubi.

The absence of a distributor at this stage suggests the film is operating on a relatively small financial scale. Major studio projects with mid-to-high eight-figure budgets almost always secure distribution prior to principal photography. By contrast, independent films that rely on market sales often carry more contained budgets designed to minimize risk and maximize potential profitability through carefully structured pre-sales agreements.

While Rachel Zegler has been attached to higher-profile studio projects in the past, She Gets It From Me appears positioned as a smaller, more intimate production. You can read that as “less risk for hiring Zegler”. Without a distributor and without a publicly reported budget, the project currently reflects the hallmarks of a modestly financed indie feature that will need to secure its release pathway either during production or upon completion.

More concrete financial details may emerge once a distributor signs on or once the film premieres at a major festival, but at present the available information points to a production operating outside the traditional studio system with a likely limited budget and an open distribution strategy. And for Rachel Zegler, this very tiny movie with no guarantee of even finding a distributor to show the thing… just might be existential to her career. What a far cry from Snow White and Hunger Games in the last few years!

hah. I’ll never pay to see anything with Rachel Zegler in it.

This is the part where she pretends it was her choice to enter her “smaller, independent, serious films” phase.

I’m waiting for the release of Two Pathetic Morons starring Zegler and Mark Ruffalo.
