Nick Reiner plead Not Guilty in the high-profile murder case surrounding the deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, setting the stage for what prosecutors say could be a lengthy legal process.
On Monday morning in Los Angeles County Superior Court, the 32-year-old entered a not guilty plea to two counts of first-degree murder. If convicted under the special circumstances charges, Reiner could face life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
Court Appearance Lasted Less Than 10 Minutes
According to courtroom reporting, Reiner spoke only briefly during the proceeding, acknowledging an April 29th preliminary hearing date. He was not granted bail and remains in custody.

Prosecutors Signal Case Could Take Significant Time
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman indicated the case is unlikely to move quickly, citing the large volume of evidence still under review and pending forensic work.

“One can probably expect that there will be that additional time sought because of the volume of the discovery that will have to be gone through by defense counsel,” Hochman said today outside the courtroom after the hearing ended. “By the fact that we’re still waiting for the coroner’s report, and by the fact that if defense counsel wants to see any additional expert testimony, it will certainly take additional time.”
Hochman declined to take questions and did not signal whether prosecutors are currently leaning toward pursuing the death penalty.
Family Reportedly Opposes Death Penalty
Sources close to the case indicate members of the Reiner family — including siblings Jake, Romy, and Tracy — have expressed opposition to seeking capital punishment.

Prosecutors previously stated they intended to consult with the family before making any final determination on whether to pursue the death penalty.
Arrest Followed Discovery Of Bodies
Authorities arrested Nick Reiner just hours after Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead inside their Brentwood home on December 14th. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner reported the couple died from multiple sharp force injuries.

At the time of the killings, Reiner had reportedly been staying in a guesthouse on the property after periods of addiction struggles and mental health challenges.
Defense Team Now Handling Case
Reiner is currently represented by the Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office after his previous high-profile private attorney withdrew from the case in January without public explanation.

Ultimately, Monday’s hearing answered only one narrow question — how Nick Reiner would plead — while leaving the larger fight ahead largely untouched. With key forensic reports still pending and prosecutors openly signaling a slow road forward, the case now shifts into a grinding pretrial phase where strategy, not spectacle, will likely define the next several months.
The April preliminary hearing may offer the first real test of the evidence both sides are prepared to put on the table.
